Why on earth would ANYONE buy Vista?!?!

  • I much doubt it that Vista will be more secure, last week they've released two security patches for Vista RC1 (Release Candidate 1). It will be the same story as with every other OS they've released : "A security issue has been identified..."
I have never bought nor will buy any Microsoft products for my personal use. Unfortunately many PC manufacturers (like Dell) will not sell a PC without a Microsoft OS (apart from servers), so I do have an XP laptop, but my desktop never had a chance to run Windows, as upon delivery I've installed Linux on it. It ain't perfect, but it's free, reliable, powerful and comes with a plethora of free apps.
I will never spend my hard earned cash to buy the sad excuses for an OS Microsoft releases. Having to deal with their OS at work it's more than enough for my blood pressure. I agree their OSs have some nice features but their shortcomings, to me at least, outweight any benefits.
As I can go on forever about this, I'll leave you with one more comment: Over the last couple of decades we've seen amazing developments hardware wise, processor speeds we couldn't have even imagined, but our computers aren't getting any faster because of the bloatware they are running. Add to that antivirus and antispyware and you end up with a stuffed pig. It is really sad that sometimes the superior technologies do not become market leaders...

Dell will give you a refund if you uninstall xp straight away - there was a nice article about it somewhere. The guy uninstalled xp and installed linux straight off and Dell gave him a refund no questions asked.

As to the added security features etc within windows, if you rely purely on M$ own security features you are in for trouble. Vista has already been proven to have code execution exploits despite claiming that certain things had been patched and were impossible this time round. Buy the hype, buy the advertising.

Everything you say is true. the problem is the uneducated ones always want the latest thing and the next thing is vista. That is how Microsoft make so much money they sell flawed products and sell you the fix to the previous product you don't make so much money by releasing something that is perfect as there is no reason to replace it that is why we don't have everlasting light bulbs, they have made them but wont sell them as once everyone has them why would they buy another one?

I personally stuck with windows 2000 [STRIKE]It never crashes[/STRIKE] ok maybe once every few months I need to reboot but that is it. Windows XP needs a reboot every few days normally.

XP fixed a few flaws but introduced a load of new ones. Windows ME was a complete waste of time it was worse than 98 on every count but it made a fair whack for Microsoft. as some people bought it. I don't think many people buy retail products anymore due to the price it is cheaper to buy a new PC than the software alone. most people that will be running vista will have a just bought a PC and use the free upgrade vouchers or buy a PC with vista on it already.

As a sales person I expect you have had loads of request to buy vista, or if anyone is buying a PC "is it vista compatible?" You need to tell them of the pro's and con's then let them make their own decision I never advise anyone to take up the new OS from Microsoft until the first service pack is released, infact I put them off buying it. If they go for it then I can and usually do turn round and say "I told you so" It is exciting seeing everyone also buy the upgrades to MS office why? they like to have office XP running on windows XP office 2000 on windows 2000. Microsoft are laughing all the way to the bank I had a customer want to buy windows 2003 as they were wanting to get office 2003. If I sell office I advise to buy a retail version so it can be transfered to any new pc's they buy in the future rather than buying OEM versions. even if they buy it lots say no were ok next time I visit they have office 2003 installed with the "DWH28" cd key used. I then tell them about the risks involved should they get caught most of the time an order for licenses comes in a few weeks later.

Seems to be some mixed feelings out there - but a lot of you want it because its *new* :) Those who don't I think are being very sensible.,

I actually put people off buying it too! perhaps I should be selling the benefits which i'm still struggling to see. There might be increased security somewhere in the coding but I agree there are going to be so many exploited holes and updates.

As for getting the OEM and saving £100+ have you even read the new Microfoft EULA? I think a lot of people will change their motherboard or CPU and get a shock when it no longer works

In terms of not running windows as its 'bloatware' I run a dual core 4200 amd, 2gb ram, raptor X hd and 7950gx2 gfx (sorry to confuse any none techies) and XP runs very slick, fast and efficient.

For anyone interested or who isnt getting optimum speed its worth tweaking XP to get the most out it

is free and a supurb way to get more speed.

The EULA is very similar to the XP one as far as the OEM license is concerned, just Microsoft are going to be enforcing a bit more...so they say.

For instance, you can upgrade any component within the machine besides the motherboard and have Vista re-activated.

Any motherboard replacements that are carried out within warranty (ie faulty), whether it is to a similar board or different altogether, will still be considered valid as long as you have your COA.

All in all, for the majority of end users this will make absolutely no difference whatsoever. Its very rare that people change the motherboard unless it is faulty - most people buy a PC and run it to the ground, then buy a new one.

Sure, if you upgrade your motherboard every 6 months, the retail version is the way to go, but then you would be considered a 'technically minded person' and thus are in a small (but growing) minority compared to people who just want their computer to work.

Hi I stopped using Windows on my comp 8 months ago. I now use Ubuntu Edgy and find I can do anything I want. Besides games--I use a PS2 for that. I have another 3 comps running on XP and they will go over to Linux when Microsoft no longer support them. I can't/won't pay that sort of money.
You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

Whilst true MS are pretty laxed at enforcing this for example I have phoned up their helpline and just said I had replaced the mobo and they gave out a new code with no questions asked.

P.S nice links, did you read the rules, lol

Yeah, you can do it pretty easily with XP, they say it will be stricter with Vista, but we'll have to wait and see. ;)

Links in my sig? What rules are they breaking?

EDIT: nm found the bit about sigs, thanks for the heads up :)

Most people won't buy Vista, it will be provided as standard on the new pc they buy without a choice of having XP instead.

People building PC's and upgrading is in the minority.

Most people go to PC World and buy a PC pre loaded with operating systems.

But they are still paying for it, it is has a cost involved it is just heavily subsidised by Microsoft/the PC company. You can get PC's without OS if you peak to the supplier, both Dell and HP have done it for me in the past they knock about £30 off. the thing is it is a pain having to install the alternative OS and finding the correct drivers for it. It is much easier to install an alternative OS on a custom built pc.
