Should I "out" my SIL's eating disorder?

  • Does your husband/brother want anything to do with his sister/wife? I'm surprised if so. What do they say about her behaviour?

i agree with this, except that someone can both have a mental illness and genuinely be a horrible person too! they are not mutually exclusive

anyway, i would just unfriend her and make it clear to your family in diplomatic ways that you no longer enjoy her company

Luckily she lives with the rest of OH's family a few hundred miles away, so I don't have to see her often at all.

I'm actually not sure I want her anywhere near my son when we do visit though. :(

OH isn't on facebook, so he doesn't really see it. I mentioned the disabled guy post to him and while he thought it was disgusting he didn't think it was his place to say anything.

It's my BIL's girlfriend, and we don't have much to do with them most of the time. BIL is besotted with her, and thinks her "Russell Brand" vocabulary is wonderful.

    Bulimia is hell. Really, hell.

Send her a leaflet for OA. It is the kindet thing you can do. OA may not be her thing, but it will show you are thinking about helping her.

I have been very close to 2 individuals with eating disorders and I have to say I couldn't stand being around either of them. Were they judgemental, self-centred control-freaks because of the eating disorders? Or did the personality issues lead to the problems with food? Either way I just had to grit my teeth not get sucked into a row. Your SIL may be slagging others off, but she's much more bothered about her own body image than other people's, and the nasty comments will just be throwaway off-the-cuff remarks. .

Try and rise above it OP, you know the truth and no doubt she pee's lots of others off too!

I wouldn't out her no, I think that is really brutal and harsh. I have an ED and not many people in real life know I have it, 2 people do. That's it.

But what I would do, is actually write on her offending status' and tell her that she is out of order/being horrid/etc etc.

Oh and I also have bulimia, and I'm one of the nicest people ever, I go out of my way to help people even though it has a detrimental effect on me, so it could just be her personality, but I don't look at fat people and think OH GOD WHAT A BLIMP.....because I've been there, and I know its not nice to be judged on your appearence.

She doesn't sound like someone I'd want to associate with anyways.
