With DS1 and 2 I had a Moses basket and brought it down during the day. Which was fine for a few weeks but my boys were big so it didn't last them that long. So they went into the cot at night. This time, I want the baby in with us for a lot longer as eventually he will go in DS2's room and DS2 will go into DS1's room with him! So I have bought a crib which will last him until around 6 months hopefully. But I think normally you wouldn't need all of them.

Boots have a clair de lune Moses basket which seems quite reasonable. Claire de lune is the make of my crib too!

Congrats to all those who have given birth - there have been loads in real life round here this week too - it would appear the Christmas spirit did get everyone in the mood 9 months ago!

We still haven't bought ANYTHING for bubba's arrival. We move into our new place mid-Oct so until then I'm just trying to get a list together so that I can go wild in the aisles straight after. Now, I'm confused about whether I need a moses basket, crib and cot and I'm hoping you girls can clarify.

A friend of mine puts her little boy in the moses basket all day in the lounge when he's sleeping and not being cuddled/fed/changed, so it seems they are getting good use of it, for now at least (though I know babies grow out of them quite fast). Where would you put the baby during the day when you're up and about (ie in the lounge or wherever) if you didn't have a moses basket?

Do you need a crib if you've got a moses basket? Surely bubba could have night-time sleeps in that too or are they not roomy enough?

What's the difference between a crib and a cot? I've seen those 3-sided cribs and quite like the look of those, but wondering if that actually just means I'm setting myself up to need a moses basket, that crib and then another cot later?

Expect more of these kinds of questions from me, I'm feeling totally clueless at the mo!

    Thanks girls, BM :) xx

I have got a moses basket with a stand which i will have for upstairs. then i will bring it down in the day for her to have a sleep of she can sleep in her pram as that lies flat too.

Cribs are smaller than cots but quite a lot and cannot really be moved about like moses baskets.

baby will be fine sleeping in a moses basket. i would advice you go and look at one to buy. i bought one off the internet and it was not very strong so i returned it and bought one from the car boot.

a lot of people put their moses baskets inside the cot but i havnt really got room for that yet!

  • Bluemonkey Our bedroom isn't big enough for a cot so we have bought a crib (off ebay for £10!!! - just needs a new mattress).
A crib is bigger than a moses basket but still small enough so they don't feel lost in a big cot so the baby will hopefully be in our room for longer.

For during the day, the carrycot off our pram is suitable for baby to sleep in so no need to buy anything extra.
Have a look on ebay - there are lots of people selling almost brand new moses baskets and cribs and then you just have to buy a new mattress.
  • I wont be using a crib because of space, we will have the moses basket upstairs and it can be brought downstairs during the day, usually i would use the pram downstairs but because we have to go up a flight of stairs just to get in the house we will be leaving the pram downstairs in the utility room. i tend to have small babies so a moses basket will last until the baby can roll over by its self. after that if the baby is sleeping during the day it will either be in the cot upstairs or the bouncy chair. to be honest when we looked at cribs we thought it was a false economy because of the amount of time it would be used versus the cost and space.
  • Im having a moses basket to start with which will go in our room, and then the baby will go into a cot bed. not sure yet if i want to take the moses basket up and down stairs or if i will have it in the babys room for daytime sleeps and just use the baby moniter. will decide nearer the time.

My sister is lending a Moses basket, then a cot in the nursery- was 20 on Gumtree.... I don't know the difference between Moses, crib, basket, bassinette, cot- as long as it's big enough to hold baby safely, then I'm not concerned! Another couple I know currently expectingkeep chatting to me about prams- which one'sbest, which accessory in which colour etc- if baby can be placed in it, and it has four wheels-that will do!

I've woken up this morning with my throat raw- I can talk, but it's whispering only.... My head is killing me, and my hearing seems blocked. I've done a couple of things around the house, just tidying, and it's making me dizzy.
I don't really want to take anything unless I have to, but that's a moot point today anyway as I wouldn't be able to contact my midwife until 0900 tomorrow. DH has ordered a day lying on the sofa and eating ice-cream and soup. Not really arguing with that.....

Will likely be lurking a lot today!

    Congrats Twinkle and Pigpen!!
