Well that's what I thought but she is very prudish so maybe that's why!

  • We have a washer/dryer, so can dry without having to hang them around the flat too much but will be slower than if we had a washer and a dryer (we haven't invested in them yet but are going to talk to a nappy lady about options, hopefully we can get a quick drying one that can be tumble dried). We are hoping that it will save money as it is going to be very tight. Just had to give in and realise that unless we want to get into serious debt we will have to stay in our one bed flat so sharing cots etc is the way forward too.

Its odd how quickly opinions change over generations. My grandmother would have thought nothing about breastfeeding her children, she also breastfed her siblings children when she looked after them (same age) which I think is very weird but thats what wet nurses did years ago.

I take my hat off to you, we're in a 1 bed, although it is very very small, our lease is up in May and it can't come quick enough.

I think if you start off with reusables then you won't know any different really :)

  • Thanks Gilly.

Just worried about spending the initial outlay if everyone thinks we will give it up anyway, definately can't afford both. (although can sell reusables on ebay)

Ours is a tiny one bed too but we own so can't do anything until it sells (without going into minus money everymonth). Only good thing is the mortgage repayments are low at the moment so we can continue to put some money in savings and there is a storage unit around the corner which is where most of our possessions will live until we get a bigger place. (having to move our coffee table out to be able to change nappies on the floor etc)

I'm looking at going down the reusables route as well, with a few disposables for night-time and when we're out and about. I've been looking on eBay and have seen Bambino Mio birth to potty sets starting at £50. Am going to watch a few and see what they end up going for. There's so many different types though, it's all a bit confusing! It also seems like one of those things where you won't necessarily know what kind of nappy suits your baby best until you're using them. So I'd like to avoid spending too much money on nappies that will end up not being suitable! Although I'm sure I could sell them on again if that were the case.

  • Today I sent my mum a picture of the scan and her suggestion was to get shot of it as she doesn't think i'l be able to cope, she doesnt like my OH and our lifestyle still isnt to her liking.

I expected this as its her normal reaction to when her children do something she doesnt approve of, like get married, go to a uni she doesn't like or god forbid date!

  • OMG ravenlady, that doesn't sound very supportive! Hopefully she will come around soon?!? xxx

We are planning on using washable nappies and I am determined to make it work! I am a bit of a hippy anyway and already use washable sanitary protection so nappies was the natural step for me. We are planning on using terry nappies with motherease wraps. I do have some size 1 disposable nappies for when baby is newborn (for the really horrendous poop!) but when we have used them we will be moving onto the terries :)

TMI alert!!!! I have some disposable maternity pads to use at first, especially if the bleeding is bad after the birth but once it has settled down a bit I will be using my washable pads as usual :) I also have some disposable breast pads and have used these to make a pattern to make my own washable ones to use once they have run out...see I told you all I'm a bit of a hippy! :D

As for staying in hospital, I am booked into the hospital in the main town but after the birth I am planning to transfer to the mother and baby unit at our local midwife led unit. All our community midwives recommend it for first time mums as you get a lot of support with establishing breastfeeding. You can stay there for up to 10 days if you want but I think I will probably stay there for 4 or 5 days. I really want to breastfeed so anything that is going to help me really get established with it is a good thing as far as I'm concerned! I know some people would hate the idea of this but I think I will really find the support helpful and am very pleased (and relieved) that this service is available where I live. My friend gave birth on Friday night (first baby) in Manchester and was out of hospital by Saturday afternoon which I think would be too soon for me, especially as I really want to get breastfeeding right.

Sorry for rambling on a bit there and I know some of you will think I'm a bit mad but I suppose we are all different and that's what makes the world an interesting place! You have to do what you feel is right for you :) xxx
