Not more so than a normal debit card cause it would just get refused if there was no money in the account. I'd check with Lloyds TSB give them a call or ask in branch.

I would very much doubt they would because if it was as simple as that barclays would issue contactless debit cards to all its customers.

  • I'm long past 18 now so kind of take these things for granted and thought that they just issued these contactless cards to anyone, as it would be no different to paying with chip and pin and if there was not enough in the account, the machine could still reject the payment.

I'm not sure where barclays fit into the story, just because one bank does not offer the service does not mean they all follow suit surely.

I've never used contactless to be fair though. I do know from reading the brochure, that these machines can sometimes ask to verify the account holder with pin entry from time to time for additional security. In my opinion it is just a gimmick anyway.

Barclays was the first bank to ever start issuing contactless cards. :p

I can actually think of a shop I use regular that accepts contactless cards except mcdonalds lol

I live in Norwich and pretty much every shop in Chapelfield(Main shopping mall) accepts Visa Paywave so it would be handy for him. I wonder if Santander will ever have it on my Zero account.
  • Why do bank staff never seem to know anything about their own products?

Why what product information do you require?

I recommend you visit a local branch rather than calling telephone banking.

If lloyds offer a contactless card to a minor ill give you my months wages ;-)

I wouldn't surprised if they do. I always thought it checked anyway. How come all the newer prepaid cards have them? Even ones that accept 13 year olds like Orange cash.
  • I thought with contactless it just recorded the details and they were saved for batch processing later?
Unless the RFID chip said it's been used to many times now, and requires you to use chip&pin.

To be honest I have wondered why the orange card is contactless and is issued by Barclays but Barclays cash accounts can not have contactless cards odd isnt it .......

Barclays website states contactless debit cards are subject to status and application which would mean to me you have to be credit scored or be pre approved for one.

I guess its another one of lifes mysteries...

PS Im only paid peanuts :rotfl:

  • I guess the answer is try, it may be a barclays thing. If it's not available it can be added on later when your son reaches 18.

I think he may be pleasantly surprised though as it does now seem to be the standard card that is sent out. i.e. I did not ask for it, they did not credit search me for it, and they sent me one on my last card renewal.
