Under 19s account - Lloyds TSB 16-18

How is the Under 19s account - Lloyds TSB 16-18? I was going to get it for my son as he is having issues with his Santander Debit card not being accepted. It is unembossed and the local shop uses a ZIPZAP machine.

How is the account? Is it a full account? Does it all faster payments,Bacs,Standing orders all online etc? Send/Receive.

Does it allow direct debits(Very important)?

Also is the card embossed and does it work on trains and planes?

Finally, how is customer service and the account in general?

Without wanting to sound rude - why are you asking this and not your son?

I got my Lloyds account when I was 17 (by myself!), not used it on a train or plane though, that's what cash is for. Debit card is a VISA debit though. Customer service never used as I've never had to.

Internet Banking was OK, although it's joining with Halifax's so there maybe some issues over the next few months.

Transfers are a little annoying as they go out the next day rather than the day you want to send them (although I am sure there is a way around this, I just don't know what it is).

I only use my Lloyds account for my bills account, my main is HSBC.
  • It is a full account, offering internet banking, visa debit card with chip and pin. I've not seen a zipzap machine in years but the card would work with them. They certainly work on trains, been a while since I've been on a plane though ;-)

£25,000 faster payments from the account, faster payments into it. Standing orders and Direct Debits can be set up from the account. It accepts BACS payments if Faster Payment is not available, but over time I believe BACS is being phased out of banking altogether as it all moves to Faster Payments or CHAPS.

I've had excelllent service from them over the years. More than happy to recommend them.

Only using the same system independently, Lloyds data is not merging with Halifax data so should be OK
  • Why is direct debits so important to you?
A 17 year old cannot legally enter into any agreement for credit facilities - are you going to use him to process stuff for you??

Not all DD's are credit based. The AA cash ISA for example, available to anyone over 16 can accept DD payments from a linked bank account. I also have a DD set up for my travelcard and you don't have to be 18 to get one of them.
  • I have opened a mobile contract under my name and he has a direct debit setup to his name. SO he pays for it. But I'm guessing the facility for DDs is there.

Your son cannot be party to a direct debit for a phone contract until the age of 18.
Did you tell the shop that he was a minor?
  • Yes, your son would have to set up the direct debit payment with the mobile company and not the bank. Your son would have to agree for the mobile phone company to take payment from his bank account for your contract. You will still remain liable for any payments due though as technically it is your contract.

Anyone can pay the bill, just that he cannot have a contract in his own name and obviously he is not responsible for paying it, the contract owner is.

Yes Three said it was fine. I just have mine setup as a secondary so if his account has a lack of funds it charges my account instead.

So is the card an online or offline card then? I'm assuming embossed from what I've read.
