I always run it under cold water untill its cold then pop it in the fridge.

I think i'm going to risk it, so if you don't hear from me tomorrow...

Rice is very dodgy. I never realised until I did Nursing at University and we studied the bacterias that are rife in it! Of all the things I eat, cooked rice is the food I'm most careful about.

If it were a day or two, I'd say make sure you give it a thorough blast in the microwave (then throw out anything leftover), but after three days it's straight in the bin.

Realise this comes a little late, so best of luck!

Last nite my fridge door obv didnt shut properly, and this morning I realised it was open a tiny bit.

It was ajar for about 7 hrs, the things in the bottom were still cold, but the top shelf things were warmish

My yoghurts were sort of warm ish, and so were my eggs, do you think I should bin them? or use them? Before my MSE moment, I would have just binned the lot and started again, but am so skint at the moment I cant afford to replace much if any of it.

    Help!!

Im trying to remember what else is in there, veggies in bottom drawers will be ok, cheese and butter? drinks will be ok, I didnt check the milk, although as I said the bottom was fairly cool.

I wouldn't personally keep any dairy products but I am very funny about this sort of thing..... Eggs will be fine, a lot of people don't even refridgerate eggs. Butter should also be fine. I've left butter out overnight and have continued using it.

Do you have homeowners insurance?? You might be able to claim - I would say it's definitely worth checking.

    Hi loopylou,

My guess is that most of it will be fine. I'd try to consume the dairy products like milk and yoghurts fairly quickly but the veggies and eggs should be ok. When you think about it they are sold unrefrigerated in the supermarkets so don't need to be kept cool.

I'll add your post to the Quick Questions on sell by / use by dates / food safety later as your query may help others.

I don't refrigerate eggs so they should be fine... milk will be ok but will obviously go off faster now, butter, will be fine, might smell slightly "cheesey" but won't go rancid in that little time.... Cheese might go slightly sweaty in the wrapper but shouldn't spoil....
unless someone in your house is poorly or immune-compromised you should be fine. I'd eat the stuff, put it that way.

I wouldn't worry about it at all, eggs and yoghurt should be absolutely fine, also cheese and butter - cheese does not need to be kept in the fridge anyway and butter in this household lives mostly outside the fridge to keep it soft.

Anything else will not have warmed up more than when you take some shopping home from the supermarket on a summer day.

  • I think all will be fine. You can tell by smell whether milk or butter is off and you certainly can with eggs! Yogurt is off anyway so only leave if they taste odd. The sweaty cheese could be grated and put into hot dish eg cauliflower cheese. If its not sweaty use it as normal. I know what you mean about being fussy in past. After watching that programme about the chap eating out of date meat and mouldy bread I have thought differently. I don't eat meat but if serving I would throw out after use by date. Apparently as long as its cooked well it should be fine. My son and husband ate 6 day past date bacon (a long story) the other day (well cooked) to no ill effects. I NEVER would have cooked it before but that programme was a lightbulb moment. Not sure I could eat mouldy bread yet but I'm sure its psychological, he said toasted you couldn't see, smell or taste mould. Scientists on prog. said the toasting would prob. kill it off. At least it wasn't the freezer!
  • on food hygene courses i was always told that for every hour a product is out of refridgeration you take a day off its shelf life.

If your dairy produce has gone off you will know ;) I think it will be all fine. I keep butter in the butterdish on my counter and it is perfectly Ok unless we have a really hot day, and then we just put it in the fridge to firm up and use it. Eggs and cheese will be absolutely fine, milk will taste off if it is off. Veg will be OK.
