Archive:Quick Questions on food safety / sell by / use by dates

Hi everyone,

We get a lot of people asking for help and advice on whether or not food is safe to eat, on or after it's sell by/use by date so we thought it might be an idea to keep the questions and answers all together on one thread.

TheFoods Standards Agency website is a good source of information on food hygene and safety.

Also you can see previous questions and discussions posted by other Old Stylers on this on this thread: Use by Dates

I hope this will be a useful reference for us all.

personally, if its a use by date i stick to it rigidly (except fresh meat which can be cooked and kept for another couple of days).

if its a best before or display until date then use your judgement. something in a tin should be good for (theoritcally) ever. with most other foods your eyes and nose will tell you a lot before you have to taste it. If you think its dodgy don't take the chance.

I'm still eating yoghurts that had a 31st May use by date on them.
I just open one up and have a look and a taste and if it's ok I eat it.
    No probs as yet.

Does anybody know how long Thai Green Curry paste lasts for once opened? I was very tempted by some big tubs of it in Tescos, but the packaging doesn't state this (being slightly dodgily translated anyhow). I don't want to have to eat it non-stop for a fortnight just to finish it off on time!

    Thank you!

  • I'm about to use up some Asda Fresh egg Noodles which have a use by date of July 2nd and which have been opened for the last 5 days.
Had a quick sniff which actually doesn't seem like goodidea as they smelled a bit funny - but then didn't smell them when fresh so maybe they're always like that!

Going to stirfry them in wok - Anything in them to give me poorly tum if I do?!
    thanks

Given the fact that they're a bit whiffy and they've been open for 5 days, I probably wouldn't eat them.
  • ...too late! I've just eaten them (oh dear)
    Thanks for your thoughts though

I would have eaten them as long as they were well heated.

Just posted on the GC challenge that I had OOD fresh ravioli last night, didn't say how OOD, many months, but they had basil in them, if they had had meat I wouldn't have risked it. I feel fin..................
