We were talking about son this evening and his new job (what again? yes again:rotfl:) and we were saying it is not so much the job but what comes with it, the pride in earning your own money, the attention to his appearance (spent 20 mins ironing his shirt:rotfl:), meeting new people, interaction, having to be polite (he greets, he seats, he clears, he cleans) where it can lead (has to be somewhere a damn sight better and further than talking to people on the xbox:D)

A job whatever it is all good for a teenager, fills the rich tapestry of life.

The other thing he will find, Victory, is that the range of jobs he can apply for will increase dramatically once he turns 18 which may pay better, if only slightly, that the NMW.

My son will go where the money is, he can sniff it out:rotfl: he won't have any loyalties if someone else offers him more money:rotfl:

Paper rounds pay minimum wage nowadays ... perhaps it depends who you're working for?

I do a paper round myself at the moment. They pay me for 1.5 hours at the min wage, but thankfully I am over 21 so I get paid considerably more than the teenager who used to do it.

Don't know if it was done on an hourly rate, or just on the number of papers when I was a youngster...but I used to get about £15/week and the round was about 40 minutes for 5 days - so around £4.50 an hour in total...Would have taken other people a lot longer - but I was quite the cyclist in them days :D

Let's ignore the benefit bashers ....

Victory, I am very frustrated by the way you decry all the suggestions you have received on here (I don't think I'm the only one).

We are all telling you to get tough with him, you say you have, but the examples you give don't sound tough to me .. Such as

    Which is a half-hearted strategy, isn't it ??

You say he understands that he has to pay his way in life, he isn't thick ... but as another poster has said, actions speak louder than words ... and his actions suggest either he doesn't understand OR he doesn't care what you think of him.

Look, we have suggested lots of strategies, and you have found a way to reject them all - and ignored my suggestion that you get the saintly girlfriend on your side (I wonder what her parents think about her ?? perhaps they have the same problem in reverse ??).

I'm going to make one last suggestion. He says he won't go to the jobcentre. Well take him there!! Go in with him, see the advisor with him, stand and look at the job boards with him. And tell him that you will do that every week until he has found himself some form of part-time employment.
That is very outdated..the job centres don not work that way now, they are there just to advise people!
    You live..You learn.:)

But he will in 10 days time when he is 18 no?

No, age has nothing to do with having to pay income tax - it is all down to how much money your earn. Anyone can earn £7,475 a year (approx £143.75 per week) without having any liability to pay income tax. Anything earned over that amount is taxed at 20%. For the amounts stated he is unlikely to have to pay NI either (that is worked out differently to income tax but as I said, on the amounts you mention he is not going to be eligable to pay it.)

Even babies have liability to pay income tax if they are rich babies with lots of savings that earn enough interest to breach the tax free alllowace of £7475 per year.
People Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading ;)
