  • I am sooooo delighted Victory - for him andthe rest of the family!!
I think once his 18th is out the way, this really might be a turing point for you.
I also agree with you not to take anything from him until he has left full time education.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

Thanks BB:D once his 18th out of the way he will be able to see properly with his wages how hard it is to come by all that he needs or wants;)

I am letting him keep it all, imagine if I suggested he paid rent now after all this trouble, he would create merry hell and we would be back to square one:rotfl::rotfl: no, let him keep it whilst he is at 6th form and has a part time job, all change next year when he leaves 6th form and may be getting a full time job if he does not go to uni, that is a whole different ball game:D

well make sure that he brings home a chinese for you ever now and then! Id be gutted if my housemate worked at a chinese/indian/pizza etc place and didnt bring home a 'perk' occassionally :D

Whoa, congrats on him getting the job and all - but that's some pretty low pay right there...I had to check the directgov website to believe it's legal. I just hope the poor reward doesn't discourage him from working altogether!

Blimey - Here is a lad who has NOOOO work experience at all, he's going to need supervising and teaching how to wait-on and so forth, and you are complaining about poor pay ?? That's hardly the example to set, now is it ?

We all have to start somewhere, and if he works 4 hours per shift (just a guess on my part) that would bring him in £52/week - which is a big step up from nowt - where he was this time last week.

If he was mine, I'd be suggesting taking £10 a week from him to put away in a bank account, which he can use to get the stuff he needs when he first goes to Uni. Of course one would hope he could do that himself, but being so clever ...

Anyway well done him, lets hope he sees the weeks trial thru successfully.:T
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Thankfully I'm not in a position to set an example to anyone, but I really think that wage is bordering on exploitation. Yes, he'll need training at the job, but everyone needs training when they start a new job and few are paid that poorly. I used to earn a higher hourly wage at 13, doing a paper round...

I can suggest the £10 a week set aside but I am guessing the answer;)

Paper rounds pay minimum wage nowadays ... perhaps it depends who you're working for?

I do a paper round myself at the moment. They pay me for 1.5 hours at the min wage, but thankfully I am over 21 so I get paid considerably more than the teenager who used to do it.

  • Great! I am glad you are feeling better about everything now. just to remind you that at that rate of pay he shoild not be paying tax or NI so that will be better still for him.

  • Whoops I didn't mean to open a can of worms with my comment about keep .....honest!

Junior's situation is very different to Victory's son, although while he was still in school we did 'encourage' him to put a good proportion of his wages away. His situaiton has now changed and we have told him what we expect from him ...fortunately there's been no arguements!

The other thing he will find, Victory, is that the range of jobs he can apply for will increase dramatically once he turns 18 which may pay better, if only slightly, that the NMW.
