Of course I let them in where possible , but it isn't always safe to do so , nothing to do with impatience :rolleyes:Same old same old since 20080 -

Flashing in that instance is an illegal signal, highway code and road traffic act states that headlight flashing is same as horn, it is a warning, and if you act on it and the car that flashed you runs into you, then you are at fault as you acted on an illegal signal.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
i dont drive so mine is more at driversfrom a pedestrian point of view..
those drivers that dont indicate when turning.
i remember having the double silvercross pushchair on in front of the other and the amount of times i could have crossed if only the driver would have indicated. then to stand there for another ten minutes for a big enough gap.
well i had to make sure had long enough to get on kerb at other end as my feet used to leave the floor to put enough pressure down to raise the front to get on the kerb..
i still hate drivers that dont indicate now because i think of all those that are in that position nowIt is not what you give your friend, but what you are willing to give him that determines the quality of friendship. -- Mary Dixon Thayer0 -

You need to read the highway code - you do not cruise in the middle lane because IT IS AGAINST THE LAW.
I assume your thread is a wind-up because most people using this site are well balanced individuals. Not middle-lane-morons.
You should work on your spelling though.0 -
The other day, I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a "Honk If You Love Jesus " bumper sticker.
I was feeling particularly cheerful that day, because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting; so I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, I'm glad I did!
What an uplifting experience that followed!
I was stopped at a red light at a busy crossroads, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is...and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus, because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed!
I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! There was just so much honking all around me !
Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind me started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, "For the love of GOD! GO! GO! JESUS CHRIST, GO!"
What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Norfolk back there, because I heard him yelling something about “Fakenham"...
I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was probably an Essex good luck sign or something.
Well, I've never met anyone from Essex; so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. My grandson burst out laughing... why even he was enjoying this religious experience!
A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed.
So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers, grinning, and drove on through the crossroads. I noticed I was the only car that got through before the light changed again, and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared; so I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Essex good luck sign one last time as I drove away.

And this aspect of the highway code is COMPLETELY out of line with how everybody drives and should be changed IMHO.0 -

MarkyMarkD wrote:Flashing is NOT illegal, it just doesn't have any legal authority.
And this aspect of the highway code is COMPLETELY out of line with how everybody drives and should be changed IMHO.
It IS illegal it is in the road traffic act, and I know the RTA is different than the highway code, although ther are elements in the code that are mandatory under the RTA. And as with any breach of the code, even if not mandatory you will be penalised harder if breaking the code resulted in an accident.
Rule 135 of the highway code:-
Flashing of headlights
"Flashing your head lights means only one thing- it lets other road users know you are there.
Do not flash your headlights for any other reason and never assume that it is a signal to proceed."
Some people drive through red lights, some people speed etc, IYHO do we change the law for them as well. get real the law is there to be upheld, break it and pay the conseqences, as I said earlier if you act on flashing headlights to mean you are being given permission to proceed, and the other driver was giving it as a warning, if the was a crash as the result of your actions,it is you who would be charged and/or have the insurance claim against.
So carry on using it as you interperate it, but I will stick to the highway code, thank youDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
The relevant section of the highway code (http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/07.htm#90) does not state that you "MUST NOT" flash your headlights. It isn't illegal. Anything in the Highway Code which is the law is shown as "MUST" or "MUST NOT" and is cross-referenced to the relevant legislation.
I don't disagree with what you say, about people misinterpreting signals. But the fact remains that 99% of people know very well that someone flashing their headlights means "it's OK for you to proceed", and the Highway Code should reflect common understanding not some mythical idea of what is right.
If you believe anyone is going to be prosecuted for dangerous driving for acting on a flashing headlight signal to proceed, I believe you are deluded.
You are welcome to follow the (flawed) Highway Code, but you'll sit like an idiot waiting for people to proceed when they clearly intended (considerately) for you to do so, and annoy a great majority of other drivers by doing so.
Drawing red lights and speed limits into the equation is a red herring. Both of those relate to the LAW not the Highway Code which is merely advisory. Many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison. Such rules are identified by the use of the words MUST / MUST NOT. In addition the rule includes an abbreviated reference to the legislation which creates the offence. Abbreviation explanation.
Although failure to comply with the other rules of the Code will not, it itself, cause a person to be prosecuted, The Highway Code may be used in evidence in any court proceedings under Traffic Acts to establish liability.0 -
As I have said, you do it your way, and I will follow the highway code, that is what it is there for,the delusion is in your head. Many years ago during one of the DoT`s revamp of the highway code, one of the points to be addressed was the point of flashing headlights, as most people did not know which way to interperate it, the choice was to decide between it meaning to proceed or as a warning, in their"infinite wisdom" they decided it would mean a warning and incorparated it into the highway code as that, if you want it changing, then petition parliament and don`t disregard the law. most of us don`t like some law or other but we obey it until such time as it is changed repealed or otherwise.
The 99% of people you refer to either don`t read/obey the highway code or really don`t give a toss.
However "flawed" it might be it is there for a reason and people like you are the ones who go through red lights, speed and generaly disregard the legalities of life because it does not suit your lifestyle. If I am to annoy other drivers by following the highway code, like obeying speed limits, then I will continue to do so,after all I am not the one in the wrong.
Breaching advisory parts of the code as you say is not in itself a basis for prosecution, however do it whilst a police car is behind you and the very least you will get is a pull and a talking to, but as I previously said, breach them and cause or nearly cause an accident and you will feel the weight of the law in regard to it.
In your world we would tear up all the rules and have anarchy.
Bottom line from my point of view, follow the rules and you will have no problems from the law,(except in the miscarriages of justice, but that is another subject)Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
