Apparently it does not protect against all types.

I will pay for a private smear for when she is at that age, I was 19 when I had abnormal cells, and the only reason why I had smear was because I suffered with many probs down below from a young age and my gyni did it routenly (sp) I was very lucky that is was caught early for me.

Averse reactions to all jabs are rare - especially severe reactions. Cervical cancer however is increasingly common, and a killer.

I won't bat an eyelid when my daughter is old enough to have it. Remembering the tragedy of Jade Goody would be enough for me.

I hear what your saying, its so darn right scary.

OH I just don't know what to do.....

No, it doesn't protect against all strains of the virus. Surely better to have every chance of preventing the disease, rather than 'catching it early' though?

My daughter is now 19 and didnt have it. It was launched really quickly and we suddenly just got a letter saying they were getting it at school the following week. Serious lack of info! So she discussed it with her Doctor following that and decided on balance not to have it.

I think what you have to remember is that vaccinations once done cannot be 'undone'. If you are unsure then dont do it! Its not up to you to guard against your daughters sexual proclivities - you educate them about that. Then hope they are sensible - and if they are they didnt need this vaccination anyway!

Pretty much every girl I teach has had these jabs when it has been their turn. We have the odd adverse reaction but mostly we have the dramarama that teenage girls create when having something like this. I think that effects them more because they are tense because x,y,z student said that they did it with a massive needle blah blah.
I wouldn't hesitate as a parent, if I ever have girls, to do this. I've had abnormal cells on more than one occasion and a colposcopy too, I wouldn't wish how I felt during that time on anyone and anything I could do to protect my child from feeling that anguish and pain, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
:D Be brave. Even if you're not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference. :D

When you say it was 'launched really quickly', I assume you mean the schools programme, rather than the vaccine itself, which has obviously been developed over a number of years through vigorous testing regimes as are required of all new drugs and vaccines?

There is plenty of reliable information out there about the vaccine. Perhaps the NHS should have publicised this better.

    Agree 100% with this.

I'll chime in here with something a little different for you to consider.

I've said a thousand times before that i'm a cancer survivor, it's also pretty obvious that i'm a guy - so right about now you're thinking "relevant how?!?", so i'll explain - cervical cancer is NOT the only cancer which HPV can be a trigger for, it's these days considered the leading cause of tonsil cancer and it's the spark which triggered my fight with said disease. Until the doctors told me that i thought HPV was basically a girls only virus and only caused cervical cancer (yeah you can imagine the shocked look on my face when i was told!) - so while the main benefit is to avoid cervical cancer, it reduces your chances massively of getting tonsil cancer too, and well, while it's one of the "better" cancers to get, i wouldn't wish what i went through on my worst enemy!

It's not worth ignoring the benefits, get the consent signed and get your daughter jabbed, best decision you'll ever make.

That's rather unfair. Blaming cervical cancer on a woman's sexual choices is very poor in my view. My oh's 85 year old gran got cervical cancer at 60 - she'd only slept with one man! What you don't ever know is how many he's slept with though!
