Mobile calls to 0800 numbers

Well, it is a personal choice end of the day;i.e whether to disclose your private number/CLI to a service run by an individual or to a corporate?
Though I don't trust any of this "big corporates", it is safe to assume there are some default data privacy rules setup when they handle your calls.
Sometimes you have to accept that the providers you use and the places you call to might see your number. You suggested Skype, which is also part of a large company.0 -
Here is another option to dial 08 numbers free from mobile without depending on a data connection or mobile app.
a) download & register your mobile number with Skype.
b) Add some topup or search for a voucher code that give £1 free skype credit
c) Skype will send you a free Skype To Go local access 0203 number.
d) Store the number in your mobile
Default Skype to Go number (0203 number) will then recognise your mobileCLI. To dial 0800 number, dial skype to go 0203 access number and then +44800nnnnnn . Bingo !
Or just do as I have done:
Download skype
Register for skype (if you don't have it already)
Open app and dial your freephone numbers as much as you like without using your mins.
The CLI presented by Skype is withheld or unknown.0 -
I've downloaded the BT SmartTalk App. You pay for any call made through it as if you had dialled from your home phone, so 0800 numbers are free.
Data charges apply from your network, so if you are abroad it is cheaper to use it on wifi.
It lets you use your contacts, so very simple to use, it does require you to have a BT landline.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. The question is, who would you trust? Microsoft or this individual running this 0800buster website. To me the answer is former, and puts someone a 'bit' on the safe side. That said, there is nothing great about privacy with microsoft or google or any internet company for that matter.
Providers like this will come and go. Remember those 07744 access number providers who exploited a billing loophole 6-7 years ago, 07744 is now a thing of past :rotfl:0 -
I cant seem to save the number. I have tried hitting the correct button to get a "pause". No luck0

I don't think there is only one individual running it
The service is provided by Localphone, which has several million customers. One of the company's founders previously started Plusnet and then Ebuyer and is also associated with VoIP provision at wholesale termination level
I don't think that quite qualifies for your fly by night insinuation.0 -

You'd trust Microsoft?
Now, you have to be joking, right?
trust Microsnot :rotfl:The bankers stole my pension (and everyone else's). It should have earned a lot of money, but they took their bonus pot first.0 -
There are a lot of mobile apps being put forward as contenders for making these free calls, but has anyone tested them for security?
And, assuming we all agree that there is no such thing as a free lunch, can someone please answer the earlier post about how these websites and app providers are making any money out of this.0 -

Is it safe to call my bank on it?
The director of 0800Buster has told us: "We don't intercept, analyse or record any call content, and limit our role to asking what number the user wants to dial and then proxying the call between them". That's as far as we've checked it out, though, so you need to decide whether to make these type of calls yourself.
Skycom's managing director also told us customers' calls are kept private when using the 0800 Wizard. "Skycom does not record, listen in or monitor any phone call made through the service," he added.
How do these services make money?
They get a tiny amount of money each time you call one of its numbers, and a further small sum when it connects you to the freephone number. Hopefully, this means they won't become chargeable in the future.0 -
Security is not an issue for me. If I make a call to my bank or use my credit card number I will use my landline. I use WeQ4U and not had a problem so far. I'm not sure exactly where they make any money, but as long as it doesn't come off my inclusive minutes (it doesn't) then I'm happy.0
