T Mobile is not clear about which numbers beginning 08 are actually free now, saying that only 08 service numbers are free on their website, but they don't clarify it any further. I think it means only 0808 numbers which are usually charities anyway. Asking at a T Mobile shop is pointless - a different answer at every shop. I will be using the 0800 android app or the 0800Buster number anyway to make sure.

Apps using voip or sip calling is blocked on T Mobile but only on their standard and medium internet pay monthly plans, but am not sure if that includes Skype. They do NOT block Skype or voip apps on their "extra internet" plan, or on PAYG.

There's a new free android app that finds alternatives to 0800, 0845 and 0870 numbers, so it beats the 0800 wizard with a 4.3 rating too:

Well I just found another free android app which is simply amazing! This one will automatically find alternative numbers to any 08 number after you type in the number in your ordinary keypad and press 'call' and also intercepts the call before connecting you. If after that you get stuck in a call-centre queue just press 9* and the app queue's for you will no more minutes being used until you get the message saying you're now connected to a human. I've tried it and it works brilliantly:

I like how mobile companies who charge for 0800 numbers have them for their sales lines. To combat the problem I am developing a free app which will warn/prevent you from accidentally making premium rate calls/calls outside your inclusive minutes such as these 0800 numbers.

Get in touch with me if you want to show your support and get your free copy.

Tell your friends about FREE PREMIUM CALL BLOCKER.

    Thanks

    Oliver

im with tmobile but i always get a msg before i call an 0800 number warning me it will be charged (08 numbers inc on my tmob tariff so doesnt matter) sure o2 does the same when i was with them

Alternatively, join GiffGaff, who provide free calls to all 0800, 0808 and 0500 freefone numbers.

Yes Buzby - it is good that GiffGaff allow free calls to 0800 numbers, you just have to top up once every 3 months. They also give you free calls to other giffgaff users as well for 3 months.

Plus if you want to save even further - you can use something like "Keepcalling.com" calling cards to call people which makes it even cheaper.

I've currently run out of minutes on my goodybag wiith GiffGaff and because I can't add any more and would have to pay a £10 top-up to GiffGaff and then 6p per minute I've just paid £2 instead to KeepCalling.com which gives me calling at UK local 3.1p/min (2.5p/min charge for using the 0800 number and 0.6p/min charge for the actual call) or mobile calling at 5p/min, way cheaper than giffgaff's 6p and I can top up with just an emergency balance of £2 until my goodybag expires.

Plus if your phone battery dies or you can't get a signal you can always find a payphone (if BT haven't removed them all yet!) and use that to make a call on the 0800 number - although that does cost 25p extra per minute.

There are a lot of calling cards out there and it seems KeepCalling offers at present about the best one.

Most of the LycaTel calling cards actually work out very expensive - they give you loads of minutes for next to nothing, but in reality you'd only get all these minutes if you made one phone call for that length of time (and I mean seriously who is going to make one phone call for something like 600 minutes!).

KeepCalling charge in minutes and don't charge a daily subscription charge or connection charge. Most of the Lycatel cards charge in 4 minute marks and charge so much per day to the card after activation (as well as a connection charge). One of the worst ones I saw charged 4 minutes for the first 4 minutes then if your call exceeded 4 minutes you were charged the number of minutes times 3 - so for example a 5 minute call would use 15 minutes of call time (5*3 = 15). One of the Lycatel cards (I think it's Cobra or Viper) even charge in 12 minute increments! So with those cards it's a bit of a scam when they say you'll get xxx minutes when in reality you'll lose most of them minutes just to charges.

    I love WeQ4U:T

It converts all 08 numbers (not just 0800 numbers) into national numbers, and if you get stuck in a queue it allows you to disconnect while keeping your place in the queue and reconnect when you get to the front of the queue.

Not quite it only converts numbers that are in its database which is limited.;)

I must be lucky as I reckon 95% of the time it's found an alternative number. Saved me a fair wad since I downloaded it. Superb app.
