Oh goodness ! I am starting to panic ! is £4,600 - £5,000 enough for my one to live on for year 1 ? no uni halls to pay for and fees for course are paid for( good ol bank of mum and dad ) ....but he's not great at managing money.I pay for his phone also. he has some savings in his own bank account but i wouldnt like him to just squander this in the first year. he could get a job while he's at uni, but they prevent it as his course is so intense !!!!! help!!!!!!

That's £115 pw based on 40 weeks, which is masses - I'm doing it on £98pw after rent (which I am paying myself) which is considered rather generous. That said, it might be nice to take him on a funded (though not extravagant) trip around Ikea as the costs of setting up home can have a disproportionate impact on the student budget.

You say he's not good at managing money - if that funded phone of his is a nice smartphone, then might I suggest a budgeting app? I use Spend, which is a fairly nifty little 59p app that I use to record my expenditure (that said, the use of it does require discipline!) and then it draws graphs, tells me how much is left in the kitty and calculates averages for me.

I believe that even if he is going to Oxford or Cambridge then he will be allowed to work in the holidays - the Olympics for instance are currently recruiting 110,000 workers for the summer in different places across the UK.
