With the capitalisation they have the returns are pathetic, around 5% profit

the 5% is what the UK tax authorities expect a supermarket to make in profits ..

whats the gross profit and "hidden" profits ?

I beg to differ then. I certainly do begrudge any member of staff witholding stock before it goes on sale to the public. It is not right or ethical in my opinion and I'm sure there is something about this in their Employment T&C's?. It certainly was the case when I worked there.

All stock whether it be in the sale or not is there to be sold to customers of Tesco and should not be stashed away in the stockroom by some selfish staff member until they finish their shift.

Managers should clamp down on this and disciplinary action taken where appropiate.
i dont think many here have the "high moral" standards to complain about tesco ethics considering some of the way this thread reads ..

Only a small proportion of stuff went to the fat cats, majority went to normal working class people and Joe Public.
    and your evidence is ...

fat cats are fat for a reason ..

Never done the DTD thing, guess I've always kind of seen it as abusing the system and taking advantage. But with my recent experience of their customer service (or lack, thereof) I feel it may be worthwhile taking advantage of their laziness and inability to update the labels on the shelf. Is it just as easy as buy item, surprise surprise SEL says half the price you paid, go to CS and they give DTD - or do you often have to demand it?

yeah i agree in a sense...but i had a go with the Barbie stuff a couple of weeks ago and was offered DTD no problems...and when I saw the phones on Thursday and then again last night as well as a printer it was too good to be true.....its more 'taking advantage' than abusing the system i think....and I dont do it often...if i was overcharged a pound or something i wouldnt quibble about it...i'd just want my pound back, not DTD!
And yes its a case of buy it...check receipt..if you've been overcharged,go to CS...they should offer DTD but some may only offer the difference in which case point out that their policy is to offer DTD...and they should give it to you!

others may think this is wrong..and no doubt Mr T will stop this at some stage, but its all swings and roundabouts..i dont mind staff having first dibs on the bargains (filling their boots with laptops is a bit wrong though)...and not leaving any of the 'big' stuff for us...so why shouldnt we take advantage as well?

I'm amazed Mr T's still doing DTD in this situation. Don't the customer services ever say to you - 'why didn't you query the amount before handing over your cash/debit card when it was obviously wrong'.
I say obviously is this instance as it was a large amount not the odd grocery £1 overcharge.

Because most of the time I'm not just buying that particular item...I buy lots from Mr T...i go food shopping there 3 times a week...1 big shop and 2 'fresh stuff' shops...and am quite often with 1 or 2 fractious toddlers....so to be honest a lot of the time I dont even look at how much the bill is..i'mtoo busy packing bags and thinking about what we're all having for dinner!
