BB it was 22 years ago I started my training and nurses seem to be trained differently now:( they are not taught respect for people anymore or how to relate to people or how important the little things are when caring for people.
When I was training we did a lot of work around this poem
    http://gii-el.blogspot.com/2009/01/crabbit-old-woman-wrote-this.html

and it has always stayed with me when looking after old people.
I never look at them as simply " an old !!!!!!" like some do.
So sorry that your DD had such awful care there is no excuse for it:mad::(.
The fact that you still have such sad memories of it goes to show that it has an effect on the whole family forever and the people providing care would do good to remember that.
I did a lot of work with young people dying of HIV related illnesses and I used to have a book where I noted when they had died and used to send the relatives a card on the first anniversary as the first one is often the hardest...marking a year that has gone by.

(((NPM))) I'm sorry that you have had such a hard time. I have to say, though, that my DD is about to start her 3rd year as a student nurse and they have been taught about respect for patients this is drilled into the,m in lectures and then followed up both on placement and with discussions with their mentor and then fed back into discussions in their tutor groups. She is 25 and I see her as part of the next group of really caring nurses. She has just finished a stint where her placement shifts were 13 hrs on a geriatric ward and I know she gave her all and was also in awe of the nursing she saw.
Another thing - have you ever seen the reply which a nurse wrote to that poem? It's a real eye opener in its own way, showing that the nurse wishes she had time for the sitting and hand holding that she would like to do. I used to have another poem, a prayer, long ago, that my sister and I found in my mum's Bible after she died. I haven't been able to trace it again. It was read out at my mum's funeral (retired midwife) and my goodness, that was hard to get through.

Big (((hugs))) to all those going through a period of nursing or watching loved ones being nursed.

WMF - do you have a copy of that poem that was read at your mum's funeral? I would love to read it x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
  • Yes WMF have seen the reply.
    Hopefully training is improving.
I can only go off the groups of students I have had to mentor over the last 20 years and believe me some of the attitudes are appalling.
I do hope it is improving as it was headed on a downwards spiral. I think the fact that they now spend more time on the wards is a good thing.
Hopefully the next generation of nurses will be more caring and professional:cool:

above should be the nurse's response.
Molly - how I wish I still had a copy of the prayer. My Dsis moves back to Scotland this year and I hope, hope, hope that she has a copy. I've moved and divorced and remarried since my mum died (1994) and was devastated to find that the prayer was lost. Will let you know 'when' it is found!

ed to add - ah NPM - thanks for your reply. You will have been one of the caring mentors that the young ones have. I truly hope that they are as full of compassion as you have been in your role (no way is it a 'job'!)
  • WMF have PM`d you a couple of nurses prayers to see if it any of them.

I think there will always be nurses who care but the paperwork seems to come first now. It's only been a couple of months since my DD died and I still feel incandescent with fury when I think of his last days and weeks. And we were given such a run around. I was told that I could go in every mealtime and help dad eat if I wanted to make sure that he was being fed. When I explained that it was a 5 - 6 hour round trip to get to him, metaphorical shoulders were shrugged.
Anyway, this is right off subject. I have just finished picking today's runner beans - 6lbs. Good grief! there are only two of us and I've given so many away that my friends hide when they see me coming. I suppose I will have to freeze them which I haven't done for years. I prefer to eat things in season, but as my DGM used to say, 'wilful waste brings woeful want'. Don't you just love these old sayings!

monnagran - so sorry that have had such an awful experience.
NPM - thanks for the PM and the links!
Hurrah...here is the link to the prayer. I have had a weep as it's the first time I've seen this in 16/17 years and it has brought back some very sad memories. The copy we found of mum's was so worn there was hardly any print - she must have brought it out countless times to read it.

In my grandads case the care he's received from the nurses and doctors has been second to none, they even let me sneak in to say good bye to him as i would miss visiting hours to get my train back from Scotland. My whole family has nothing but great things to say about the care he's received.

OH is on his way home! I can start cooking my dinner soon :) Off to make lunches and meal plan with all my lovely food we have! I think we've got 20 meals in the house at the moment!

I'm baking a three tired raspberry ripple cake on Sunday, it looks delish!
