I've just cleared out the kitchen store cupboard. I've made a list of some bits that need using in the next week or two. I will mealplan them in to use them up. Already have a peach fruit flan to make using a flan case and tinned peaches that are past best before, and Tiffin using up some rich tea biscuits and glace cherries. I will be left with the following to use up-

    200g glace cherries
    Chickpeas
    Couscous
    Red kidney beans
    Minature Port bottle
    Jar French mustard
    Jar English mustard
Basmati rice (I love this with curries but DH is not so keen so any suggestions on how to use it up while covering the taste would be great!)

Does anyone have any meal ideas for using up the mustards in particular?

i would do a bean chilli with your chickpeas (ok not really beans) kidney beans and maybe soem baked beans if you have them and serve with the rice

You could make a dressing with the french mustard, add some lemon juice, then honey or similar and whisk up to use as a dressing on a salad?

I always use mustard in cheese sauce and I also make a salad dressing with french mustard - I use french mustard, honey and balsamic vinegar and a little bit of oil. It's lovely!

Would your OH eat the basmati rice if you made a rice bake? Just put the rice, double the volume of liquid, onions, chicken, mushrooms, stock cube and anything else I have in and bake it in the oven in a covered casserole until all the water is absorbed. Then I stir through a knob of butter and it's lovely! Or sometimes I make a mock byriani with rice, stock cube, curry powder, raisins, almonds, mango chutney, fried onions and cooked chicken - just lob it all in a casserole (again twice the volume of water to rice) and cook until water is absorbed. We have it with naan or poppadums and extra mango chutney.

Couldn't advise on the cous cous or chick peas as I don't like either of them! DD1 loves cous cous but always gets the Ainsley Harriot one.

I went to Tesco and spent £11.49 - the SA was really funny with me as my bill was £22 something and I had loads of vouchers (all for stuff I had bought) - free shreddies, campbells soup and loads of 30p off Clover which is on bogof - she was really irritated, but at least she didn't make a big fuss and call over the supervisor!
Then I went to Home and Bargain and bought squash and ketchup so total spend for the day was £13. Have just £10 left in budget to last until Monday so should be okay I hope. This will be the first time I have come in under budget if I manage it!!

Quintwins - I like the idea of a mixed bean chili. OH wouldn't go for it as meat free is not something he quite 'gets', but I may try a something along those lines as I'm sure the kids would eat it and my kind of thing too.

I mostly use Dijon mustard in dressing although I do sometimes use french mustard with balsamic. I havent tried it in cheese sauce but will do with our roast at the weekend I think.

Recovering Spendaholic - I love the rice idea, sounds scrummy. Do you use raw chicken or cooked chicken leftovers? Thanks

I use mustard - wholegrain in my case - in my spicy carrot soup for a kick, also great on cheese on toast, in cheese straws/scones/cheese pastry for pies/quiches etc
Trying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

Personally, I take it out of this month and then I should hopefully be able to reduce my budget in future months.

Thanks Sproggi - not doing too bad on my budget this month (as I can't get out lol) but wanting to reduce it by a pretty big chunk from now on so seemed a good chance to do a final stock up!:D

    Sorry for all the questions...

For anyone who gets an online order - do you usually wait until it's delivered before updating your spend? Just thinking that if there's substitutes/something I don't want, it may change?
