Protein making your dog hyper or not very much depends on where the protein comes from.

Cereals, rice, wheat, grain etc being the source of the protein will absolutely make the dog mental and hyper.

If it comes from meat, the dog will digest it correctly and not convert it to glucose. And so it wont become hyper.

Orijen has 40% protein, yes a dog on that will be calmer than a dog on a 20% protein food depending on where the protein comes from.

Look at raw fed dogs, all meat, lots of protein, nice calm dogs. Because it's digested as it should be.
I feed my dogs Hills Advanced fitness dry food, which is 24% protein. Does that sound too high? Should I look at changing it?

Hi, just to say I wasn't endorsing White's premium just mentioning the offer because usual price ( and quality I think) equates with Burns, James Well beloved etc. I particularly like to feed mine fish. The down side might be that the kibble is rather large.

Out of interest I looked up protein value of cereals believing they were all carbs. I was wrong Wheat: 13%, rice 7% protein so it very much depends on the particular cereal being used. But grains can not be the main source of protein because they are so low.Wheat can cause intolerant reactions. People using a BARF diet are feeding their dogs bones which surely aren't high protein?

I remember going to a very interesting talk by John Burns years ago (when his food was little heard of) saying he developed it because a lot of the animals brought to his surgery had skin problems etc which he felt sure were linked to diet. He advised people to go home and make a home cooked diet for their pets but it was hard work , that's why he developed the complete food. Rough proportions he suggested were: one third meat, one third cereal (rice being the most easily digestible) and one third veggies.

I am getting my tin hat ready for the next barrage of comments.

I use Orijen for my dobermnan Mia, she loves it. She is definately not hyperactive, very calm infact. She had terrible skin before we switched her, and her poo's were huge and stunk!

Thanks Katiehound, just ordered a couple of bags of the Light and Sensitive to try out for my boy (great price compared to what I pay for James Wellbeloved).

Just in case you are looking for reasonably priced good quality dog food I posted a code here a while back. Bogof on Whites Premium which makes it around £20 per 15kg bag.
I ordered sensitive for mine because it was salmon. They enjoy it and look fine.
    Code valid until Dec 31st

Wow! That's good, I had a quick peek thinking it wouldn't suit Mr B (wheat intolerant) - he's on Skinners Duck & Rice which is the best quality I've found for the price.

See these are wheat free:j at that price, I may well give it a go .....

Hey Katiehound you don't need your Tin Hat!! :p :rotfl: I'm not having a go....but!.... ;)

Wouldn't Skinners Field & trial be better than feeding White's in the long run as you can get the Duck & Rice 15kg- £20, Salmon & Rice 15KG for £23 etc. Turkey & Rice 15KG for £26 these are definitely the best Skinners foods from the range.

I would say that the ingredients of those three skinners foods are better than Whites and also the Skinners feeding guide is slightly lower so the bags would last a bit longer.

Also made in the UK too! ;)

I just think that once the offer has finished the Whites is quite expensive for the contents.

I understand that hun, and I'm not meaning any offence. But the ingredients speak for themselves. A lot of people will recommend bakers, but it's the worse food going. I knew a dog trainer, excellent at his job but swore by bakers.

Vets recommend hills and royal canin, again, the ingredients speak for themselves. But vets have a bare minimum of food training and recommend whatever their practice is getting a kickback for selling. In the same way doctors have a bare minimum of knowledge of out diets, and if you need advice there, they send you to a dietician. If you want dog food advice, ask a canine nutritionist, not a breeder, trainer or vet.

As I said, I don't mean to offend, I'm not an expert, but the ingredients speak for themselves. You can't really argue with them.
