Thanks for your suggestions of Skinners. When I have stocked up with Whites at the bogof price I will look seriously at those because even Burns Alert (working dog so VAT free has got to around £32+.)
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Hi, just to say I wasn't endorsing White's premium just mentioning the offer because usual price ( and quality I think) equates with Burns, James Well beloved etc. I particularly like to feed mine fish. The down side might be that the kibble is rather large.

Out of interest I looked up protein value of cereals believing they were all carbs. I was wrong Wheat: 13%, rice 7% protein so it very much depends on the particular cereal being used. But grains can not be the main source of protein because they are so low.Wheat can cause intolerant reactions. People using a BARF diet are feeding their dogs bones which surely aren't high protein?

I remember going to a very interesting talk by John Burns years ago (when his food was little heard of) saying he developed it because a lot of the animals brought to his surgery had skin problems etc which he felt sure were linked to diet. He advised people to go home and make a home cooked diet for their pets but it was hard work , that's why he developed the complete food. Rough proportions he suggested were: one third meat, one third cereal (rice being the most easily digestible) and one third veggies.

I am getting my tin hat ready for the next barrage of comments.

Whites is a fine mid range food with an okay meat content and for £20 you can't really complain.

I'm not personally a fan of burns, I'm sure a million dogs do well but it's 60% rice and £50 a bag. That's a bit rip off for me. Skinners duck and rice has practically identical ingredients to burns duck and rice yet is £30 cheaper. I'm not saying it's a bad food, just shockingly priced for the ingredients.

I feed my dogs Hills Advanced fitness dry food, which is 24% protein. Does that sound too high? Should I look at changing it?

I'm not a fan of hills either, again, it's not the worse food, it's just expensive for what it is. Arden grange lamb and rice is £50 for two bags delivered at berriewood. Great food. Gets 4* over the at review site. As opposed to hills which generalyl gets 1*

If you do try skinners (IMO it's the best budget food around), stick with either the duck and rice or salmon and rice. Both about £19 for 15kg at vetuk.

Skinners Field & Trial Turkey & Rice (a more recent addition to the range) is good too it's a bit dearer at £26 for £15KG (at vetuk) but has added "joint aid for dogs" = Joint Aid supplement (2% comprising of glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, MSM, glutamine, curcumin, oils & fats, beta glucans, oligosaccharides.

Don't look ad the advertising hun, look at the ingredients.
Maize, Lamb Meat Meal (min 14%), Barley, Rice (min 14%), Meat Meal, Beet Pulp, Poultry Fat, Digest, Vitamins & Minerals, Linseed, Kelp (0.2%), Yeast (0.1%), Citrus Extract (0.04%) & Yucca Extract (0.01%).

Might be natural if you were eating it, but there's nothing natural about maize, barley and rice making up the majority of a dogs food.

Maize is a very well known allergen for dogs, can cause all manner of problems. There's three fillers, riice barley and maize, instead of the one you will find in decent food. Plus no percentages, on the barley and maize, but since maize is listed first the food will be maize based.

And will only 14% meat. Meat is the only ingredient a dog wont convert to glucose. Since they can digest the meat properly, but not the rest.

Again hun, the ingredients speak for themselves.
