My son got £100 for his 18th and was grateful for it! Though I do still pay his phone contract.. simply because I want to know he can get in touch whenever he wants and has no excuse.

You should watch some of those spoilt brats on MTV and their demands for their parties! You'll consider yourself lucky after that!
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

for my 18th my mum ordered me a cake with Scarymissmary on it - it cost £30 and that was my only present.
I think your son is bang out of order asking for so much, especially when he knows your financial situation. I would let him go out with his mates on his actual birthday as it's his 18th he probably wants to get drunk.
I think he should have a memorable present as its such a milestone, if you go to the buffet place a lot it's not going to be as special. Could you reach some kind of compromise that you will pay x amount towards a certain present eg half the cost of his driving lessons?

Yes, kids do have unreasonable expectations sometimes, don't they? Not helped by the fact that ALL of their mates have parents who seem to cater to their child's every whim.

I suppose because he has a roof over his head, meals, drinks, and laundry services provided, free tv, internet, landline and power supply, he thinks that you are well off......well, he certainly is! :rotfl:

You're doing absolutely the right thing, a meal out and a shiny new phone is more than enough, I'm sure that if you had a lottery win, he would get much more. But until then, he will have to make do.

He could always try working and paying for his own holidays, car, driving lessons, speakers and party? ;)

    Kids........Grrrrrrrrr!!!!!

those make me feel ill - there was one where her parents spent $65,000 on a car for her and she started crying cos they gave it to her in the day rather than in the evening in front of all her mates and shouting that they had ruined her birthday!

i wouldnt even get him a card if he is that ungreatful!
if he wants a new phone tell him to go get the contract. if he wants a holiday hand him the job ads and tell him to work!
remind him you are not everyone elses parents you are his and as you took him into this world you can take him right back out again! hahaha

i remember that one! if she was my daughter everything would have been cancelled and she would have been made to go out and work to pay back all the lost deposits etc....

I have a 13yr old who demands everything.... I am disabled and my hubby is my carer so money is tight. We bought him a computer but he now wants a new one as he doesn't like it. He has a large tv in his room (came off freegle) but he wants a top of the range HD one.
He gets all his meals, sky tv, internet access, all laundry done, decent mobile phone (pay as you go) which I pay for.
Now he wants a blackberry on contract and a £500 laptop for christmas.... don't think so somehow.
Never was like this in my day (makes me feel old), I used to get one main pressie and a couple of small and was always delighted with what I had..... guess we never had pc's, laptops, mobile phones when I was his age.

Too much pressure from mates now who seem to have everything (are the parents stupid or is this just not true?)

Where did we go wrong raising these twonks?! They think they're hard done by if they can't have everything they want but do nothing in return.

Mine (19 this wk) finished uni in April and has spent the summer sat on his ar*e playing on his x-box. I came in from work on Thursday and he asked me to talk to step-d because he was 'incapable of clearing up dog mess his daughter's dog had left the previous night'! Hubby leaves for work at 6.30 am and hadn't noticed it when he cleared up after our dog. He thinks changing his bed, doing his ironing and occasionally emptying/loading the dishwasher is more than enough for someone with his intellect (his words)

Sorry, I've hijacked your thread and turned it into a moan about my ungrateful twonk who got a 40" tv for his 18th (courtesy of tesco double clubcard deal) and asked where the blueray was to go with it

I was already working away at sea on my 18th birthday.. Mega excited when i got home a month later expecting to find a load of cards and prezzies waiting for me... what was there? diddly squat.... (can you tell im still upset about it 8 years on?? lol)

I would buy him a card and a lovely personalised cake, one of those with a picture on it (embarrassing baby photo maybe) and take him out for a meal, assuming he can fit you in his busy schedule. If he cant make it then its his loss really...
