Oops. At the 3k mark - where the Doves kick in with "Kingdom of Rust" - a song I used to love and now despise thanks to running - I was joined by an unwelcome friend - a big old twinge from my knee. Stopped running immediately and maintained progress at a brisk walk straight home.

Mr. Bloater, wise move to stop running when pain came. Now the question is whether you want to run now or you want to keep running. I had to make this choice - and chose the latter. Your knees hurts because you are heavy and are putting loads of pressure on them; this is not a joke - if you continue you may do some serious damage.

Way forward? You need to build what I call the 'infrastructure of running' - ligaments and muscle. This is done by doing: press-ups, squats and pull ups. All these can be done outside - and start with 10 - 20 of each, three rounds with some aerobic thing in between (2 min jog or some jumping ...). Another thing to watch is your running technique - most people do hill to toe. Landing on your heel with all weight (anyones btw) sends all the pressure through the bone and straight into the knee joint. The way to do it is to roll toe to heel (to do that one should lean forward from the ankles and it take quite a doing and developing of little muscles we don't know exist).

Hope this helps - I do all that and I am going to win a marathon when I am 80.

I know it's not as convenient and involves a cost but have you thought about swimming? Low/no impact on joints and a great cardio workout for the whole body?

Sorry to hear this, MrB - sounds like, while you're around your present bmi, another form of exercise is called for. Neoprene supports in the meantime? And possibly paracetemol as well. Take care.

Mr B has almost got me wanting to go jogging/fast walking again. On the basis I need some bean sticks for next year, does anyone know of a good cheap accurate pedometer (I hope that's the word), not one of those cheapos that will put me as walking 5 miles when all I've done is jiggle along to the Rubettes and Sugar Baby Love.

I have an excellent pedometer, its an omron, from argos but not exactly cheap at £25, but its very good and only measures continuous movements after your first 8 step, so if you have been sitting it waits until it knows your actually walking and not shuffling about, it doesnt measure random movements, like a lot of them do. It also measures distance, calories, has a clock and a 7 day memory ect. i love it and its very addictive! its very simple to set up and use.
It also counts upto 99,999 steps.

  • You are doing really well Mr B, and you are an inspiration to us all.
You are right to listen to your body.

As has been said there are lots of exercises you can do indoors or outdoors so your fitness level can be maintained while your knees recover. It will help you feel motivated and determined even while your jogging is temporarily on hold.

I jog on my treadmill (I,m not brave enough to do it outdoors), around 5 miles but I don't know what that is in Kms, and also bootcamp 3 times a week. That consists of squats, press ups, lunges, pressups and plank, were you lie on the floor just on toes and elbows and hold as long as possible (not long believe me). I find the combination of jogging and boot camp works for me, and its just a case of finding a routine that works for you and fits in with your lifestyle.
