I've a friend with fibromyalgia and she's been attending a pain management class where they teach relaxation techniques. She's coming round on Monday and Tuesday evenings to try and get me in the zone for Wednesday's procedure.

Never had a central line put in while I'm awake...bit nervous I have to admit. Don't do pain well :o

If it feels anything like a Picc line going in then it wasn't too bad just a little uncomfortable

I had a picc last time and i agree the thought was much worse than the actual thing. It never worked properly tho hence the Hickman this time as its much wider.

My picc kept blocking. Ended up with two inch clot in my upper arm, part broke off and I collapsed in chemo. After that I was on daily Daltaparin injections until day before surgery,

I'm to go back on Daltaparin with the Hickman so 6 months of self injecting coming up. I'm such a blinking woose.

I'd much rather be out for the count. Seemingly they'll freeze me up with locals and do it in x-ray as they ultra sound the vein. Think kind thoughts on Wednesday :(:(

KJ - You may be able to get advice on hypnotherapy and the like from Maggie's. At my local hospital, they give patients and carers the opportunity of 4 sessions of complementary therapy free (aromatherapy, reflexology, reiki and massage). At the Christie they have a large comp therapy suite and use reflexology to relax people and help the blood flow. Good idea to get tips from your friend, any relaxation techniques you can employ will help the medics get blood samples (if the body is stressed then your blood goes to your core so that you can fight or flight).

Anyways, you probably know all this stuff, so I just wanted to say I am another one waving you and Taxi thro' your fight ... will be sending positive thoughts on Wed.

    Thanks Taxi.

Hi NL. That's a good shout. I seem to remember something about that last time round. I think Macmillan offered complementary stuff as well.

I'm going to have a session with my friend tomorrow night and I've booked in to see a hypnotherapist on Tuesday night. I'm at the nothing ventured stage...if it seems to be something that can help then fantastic.

First time I had chemo they had a reflexologist work on me and whilst dozing me up on lorazepam. They'd had 5 failed attempts by then and 6 is the max before they tell you to come back tomorrow. That first chemo session took 7 hours. Reason why they had the PICC line inserted before the 2nd session.
