Good point, but I don't think many of us would risk the loss of a £1499.97p Panasonic 37" HD TV on this principal..when..any old address will do.

On this very issue - I was waiting to be served at CSD, about 6 months ago now, when a lady in front of me was complaining that she had been overcharged for a pair of child's jeans. She was told she would receive a full refund on the product and get to keep it as a thank-you for bringing it to their attention. Very nice, I thought. Just how Sir Tel attended his staff to act!!!! But then she asked the lady to fill in her name and address. The customer said that she didn't wish to give this information. The CS girl was taken aback and said she would have to ask someone waht she was to do. A manager was called. The manager said that Tesco were in theri right to request this information when a refund was being given. The customer (who incidently appeared very well dressed, well spoken and educated) said that while they may be in theri rights to request teh information, she was equally in her rights to refuse to give it!! By this time the security guard, who had been standing nearby, wandered over and listened to what was going on. The manager told the customer that, as the refund was discretionary, she would have to give the requested information if she wanted it. She again repeated that she was under no obligation to divulge the information, that it was she who had been overcharged and entitled to a reund and it was Tesco who had decided to implement a policy to refund more than the amount overcharged! The manager was getting extremely annoyed and the CS girl was blushing for England. The security guard then commented that the customer was right and that only the police had the right to this personal data. He said that the lady had done nothing wrong, was in her right to refuse the request for information and then went on to crack a couple of jokes about some persistant shoplifters who always refused until the police was called in any event. As the manager had no grounds to call the police on this occasion, nothing could be done.

By this point, the manager looked as if he was about to throttle the security guard. He shoved the receipt back in the hand of the CS girl, grunted "refund" and stomped off!!!

The CS girl made the refund without another word and it was left to the security guard to apologise to the customer. So musch for "customer services"!!!

The lady accepted the apology with a parting remark along the lines of "well let's hope that it never happens again". I was highly amused.

Don't know if the security guard still works there - won't if the manager has anything to do with it!!!! Have never seen one intervene like this before but the point is that if he and the customer were lawfully correct in what they were saying, then it would make a mockery of any such anticipated "requirement". While many customers would merely oblige to it, those who already feel that this giant collect far to much data, will not!!!!

    Good on her!

However, if pushed for such information I just make it up there and then.

Yeah, yeah. Heard it all before and it all sounded credible enough then too.

I mean no disrespect, but I'll believe it when I see it as nobody has been able to post any actual "evidence".

However, just in case, I'm making sure I visit plenty of stores in the run-up to Monday - for old time's sake, you understand :rotfl:

I'm a Duty Manager for Tesco Metro and was privvy to a conversation on the weekly conference call last week. The SD and Shrink & Security manager both confirmed that the policy will be changing from week 1 (we're now in week 51), due to sites such as this and abuse (I'm sorry, but that's exactly what it is) of what started out as a customer service policy.

Considering it hasn't been rolled out to stores in their orange bag yet, exactly how would you expect some evidence.

As for your dvds, you wouldn't have been getting free dvds under the new policy, they'll be making it watertight against those I've heard called 'gentlemanly thieves' :rotfl:

It's w/c 26th Feb, not next week. The info will be passed to stores in the form of a Direct to Store document in the orange bag. I'll expect to see it in my store either this Friday or next.

Again, it was mentioned by an SD on a weekly conference call that the policy will change in Tesco week 1. If it don't happen, it's his duff info

Animal Farm mate : Who exactly are the thieves, Tesco or the R&Rers. Think about it.

Just to add a new theory to the mix...

Whilst obtaining a refund on some overcharged steak today, I had to involve a manager. As the csa was changing shift after me, the new csa kept reminding the old csa and the manager about the NEW policy.
I queried this with the manager and apparently ;) they will be taking name and address for all r&rs. When I asked what they would do with this info, she said that T would store it and if they noticed customers being repeatedly o/c they would contact them to help with their shopping :o

Don't know if that's the true change or only part of it, but I thought I'd throw it in the debate.

I work for Tesco, do you really want me to come onto this forum and call R&Rers thieves? I will if you want but I'd rather refrain for now

Whatever you think about Tesco, people will ALWAYS come back. I've heard plenty of people complain and tell me they'll shop at Waitrose, Sainbury's, Asda et al. The following week they come back because of price.
