when i hit target (many moons ago now :rotfl:) i was told to not increase my syns from 5-15 a day and to add on extra HEA/HEB instead until i found the "right" number of extra HE for me to maintain rather than loose/gain.

That's roughly what I was told too but as my consultant was away it was never really explained properly. I must admit that (other than cheese) I wasn't hugely excited about extra HEXs so tend to have a few more syns instead, so a bit of mix and match. To be honest my lifestyle since getting to target (August) feels like I've been lurching between syn free and flexi because of all the meals out I've had. Probably distorted by Christmas so I'm glad to get back to 'normal'.
OK I hear you - the fruit yoghurt I have isn't a fruit jam but rather pieces of fruit in the yoghurt so hopefully it's free.

I haven't resorted to the sandwich so I'll count the chicken as HEB.

    thanks :A

Thank goodness for that, I was feeling guilty already!;) personally, I'm not a yogurt fan but there are fruit yogurts, fat free which can have syns. Take Muller lights which always seem to be changing syns with new recipes. It must be something to do with sugar. Wish I could email you some cheese mm, I've got loads!!

bluemonkey, I feel for you in your predicament but I would be really worried about making your DD too aware of her weight 'problem'. IMO it's one thing to tell children they need to eat more healthily and be aware that junk food is for treats only, quite another to have them being weighed and introduced to the concept of syns. I don't know what you have to give your son for his 'fats' but there must be things he can have that wouldn't be attractive to your daughter. If you look at what they learn at school about food groups and healthy eating, I think that's the level of information you should aim at with a 9 year old. You're absolutely right to ban 'junk' from the house, then maybe you can take them out at weekends and buy a treat away from the home so she understands the difference. Hopefully the work you're doing now (and I admire you hugely for doing so) will pay off so that when she's older and out and about on her own the good habits will be ingrained.

Good luck lillian. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Burgen Soya & Linseed (if that's what you had) is 6 syns a slice:eek: Maybe you're just trying to use it up but you really need to stick to wholemeal or WW. At least you have a HEB going spare now.;) Do ask as many questions as you like but there should be free membership vouchers around soon and that would mean a single trip to a group (to get new books and a talk) would be relatively cheap.

Oh no! Well I've had no other syns today, not really a sweets eater (when it's not Christmas) so that should be ok. I could probably do with an up to date book, I do know people that go to the group so would I be able to get them to buy me one if they said they'd lost theirs? ;)

    So today I've had:

B: 1 slice Burgen S&L (6 syns, argh), 2 egg omelette with milk from allowance (HEA1), mushrooms, chopped tomato and Actifry (free)
L: Veg pasta with spaghetti (free) with a sprinkle of cheese (HEA 2)
D: Chicken (HEB 1) and veg curry from SW website with boiled rice (free)

Snacks: Grapes, Plum, Orange & Dark Choc Muller Light, Fat Free natural yoghurt with frozen fruit (all free??)

Do I HAVE to have another HEB? And I'm only half way through my HEA milk so what happens with that?

I'm not a fan either but as I had no cheese I felt I should have some calcium. I can't get Muller Light over here so what I have is Yoplait but don't know if they appear in any of the books.

Actually I'm not a big cheese eater either but do like my grated mozzarella on my breakfast frittata!

We are on EE. Got the Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall Veg book for Xmas - did a lovely north african stew last night with butternut squash, orzo pasta and chickpeas. Twas lush, got leftovers for tonight.
Sounds great! I have adapted a few recipes from there so far, the veg biryiani was lovely, the merguez chips were great, his frittata/tortilla recipe works well too.

you don't have to eat any HE if you don't want them. if you have a balanced diet with lots of super/free food then you will already be getting what your body needs. calcium is in green veg and fibre is in veg and fruit.

if you are only half way through it don't worry about it, just leave it for today if you don't want anymore. theres no point forcing yourself to eat food you don't want, its just extra calories in that you have to make an effort to burn off in the future.

remember, your body always knows what it wants better than you do so if its telling you it doesn't want something, then listen to it.

only thing with them is they don't roll over so if you don't eat todays quota then its gone for good.
  • Can anyone tell me how many syns there are in a Breezer? Of all the things I CAN'T get over here - I can get Breezers! I have 3 sitting in the fridge - orange, pineapple and lemon. I can take them or leave them but just out of curiosity I want to know about the syns.

Thanks for the replies. Have weighed DD and just filled in the red book (told her I was just doing her yearly check that the school would do) and she is 9kgs over the 50th centile and on the 91st centile.

So I need to get a grip on this now, going to post a thread to see if there anyone else who has done this with their young girls.

She knows full well what is healthy and what is not, however, that does not stop her sticking it in her mouth and she will have a tantrum over it, what I need is for her to actually see that the food is bad for her. As an example, she will load her bowl up with weetabix minis - what she is actually eating is 5 portions so I have started making both kids measure the portion out with a pot. I think knowing how many syns it is will help her more - and will stop her stealing the food as well.

She has school dinners - should I be changing this to a packed lunch? My son has packed lunch and so eats with us in the evening but we do things like putting extra cheese on his food. What is hard is things like yogurts, her not be having to have what her brother has.

While I do not want to get fixated on the scales, if she is under the doctor then she will be weighed so then there will be focus on the scales. Hard to find a happy medium.
