Hi all, not posted on here for ages but put on everything I lost over Xmas so I am on the bandwagon again!! This time with hubby on board too..... I am hoping it was because I had heavy clothes on or was carrying some water last week but tomorrow for WI it is more or less starting all over again - with a passion, ready for holiday in April.

I have a question though please, can someone please tell me the number of syns that you have when you are trying to maintain.

Right (or wrongly, I do not know) I am trying to educate my 9 yo daughter in good and bad foods. I am having a bit of a nightmare with her in that, although I was limiting her food intake, she was stealing it from the cupboards and eating it in her room and hiding the wrappers. Because she prefers sitting doing crafts to running around the garden, I am sure where you can see where all of this is heading, she is not the skinniest of children.

We have actually have thrown away a lot of the foods and I do not buy them at all, those we do have are stored very high up where she cannot reach them. However, if I have put on excess weight over Xmas then I am pretty sure she must have as well, I am sure she has eaten more than I have. While I have never focused on scales (I have only weighed her once and she was still on 50th centile), I do need to weigh her tomorrow and see if she has gone off that line.

I feel guilty doing this but I figure it is better to get a grip on this now as, if we go to the docs, they are going to be weighing her and making an issue of it anyway.

I want to show her the syns she needs to eat each day to remain healthy and the number of syns in the foods she eats too much of. I think that if I show her that a chocolate biscuit is 4 syns, it might make her think about what she is putting into her mouth if she steals it. The problem I have though is that her brother has a condition that means he can eat whatever he wants and because he is underweight, he has to have fat in his diet. It is hard because while we have to give him fat, it means that she cannot have it.

If anyone could tell me the number of syns to maintain please, that would be most appreciated. I hope no-one thinks of be being a bad mum, I do not want a skinny obsessed child but we are already borderline on her getting into clothes for the next age and while we are all eating healthy and cutting back I can sit down with her and show her what we are eating and why. Thanks.

Flat Eric, I just saw your message about breakfast, my husband is the same but he has started buying those 'just add water' pots of porridge so he can have them later when hungry. Is this an option for you?

    Thank you :A

It was a fat free fruit yoghurt so not sure how free it is but I don't have anything else to use as HEA as I've run out of cheese and I don't drink milk.

I've got chicken in the risotto for supper is that a problem on green?

it depends what make, i know the muller light with fruit jam in the bottom are syned but all the ones that are e.g. fat free strawberry yogurt are free.

you don't have to use up the HE if you don't want them, I've had days where i've not used any before. HEA is for calcium but theres loads of calcium in some green veggies and they are chock full of fibre that HEB is for too so you aren't missing out on vital nutrients if you don't have them.

if you're on green, the chicken will have to be a measured HEB, which would mean no sandwich or either the chicken or bread syned if you've already eaten it.

when i hit target (many moons ago now :rotfl:) i was told to not increase my syns from 5-15 a day and to add on extra HEA/HEB instead until i found the "right" number of extra HE for me to maintain rather than loose/gain.

15 syns ends up being a whole normal size chocolate bar a day and i'd say that prob is the right amount people should be eating on a daily basis to be healthy even if they aren't trying to loose weight.

have you ever bought the magazine? recently they've started doing "syn pyramids" and showing you what of different treats you can have for 10 syns. they did one that was went from 10syns = 1 mince pie or 10syns = 40 flying saucers. (at least i think it was a mince pie, i just saw i could eat 40 of my fave sweets a day and went off dancing to the cupboard)

I don't think you're a bad mother at all BM but I do think you can handle it in a simpler way without stressing out about it yourself and without getting her obsessed about it either.

I personally would not have any of the bad snacks in the house at all. There are plenty of good high-fiber bars on the market that are better for her than the other stuff.

Have plenty of fruit in the house and eat it yourself - it always sets a good example for them when they see us doing certain things.

If you cook the SW way and serve that food to her too then you are in control of what she's eating and it will be well balanced. If these meals also have pasta or potatoes with them then you can serve more to your son, who needs more, and less to her without her feeling deprived that he's having something she can't have.

Milk - give him full fat milk and her skimmed. There are lots of good fats that you can give him that you can substitute with other stuff so that she doesn't feel left out and deprived which is the most important thing.

Good luck - it's hard I know (I've had similar problems here).

OK I hear you - the fruit yoghurt I have isn't a fruit jam but rather pieces of fruit in the yoghurt so hopefully it's free.

I haven't resorted to the sandwich so I'll count the chicken as HEB.

    thanks :A

Yes, ham with 'all visible fat removed' is free. I thought you might be using stuff up from storecupboards but if you're doing a shopping list then why not go for very light mayo or even fat free dressing or tomato based sauce (passata or puree)? I often stir in some red beans for a bit of bite. My favourite is roasted veg (onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic) stirred into pasta. I eat these cold for packed lunches.

mm, I don't do green but as you've had absolutely no meat then I think you must be OK for a green day. But don't blame me if I'm wrong after you've eaten the sandwich!!

as a non chocolate eater, i use my sins for a bit of mayo, i hate the low fat stuff :)

    Hello All,

Been AWOL over xmas - don't use computer at home - so have missed you all!

Well last week WI was sts, but tonight i reckon it will be a different story!

Today is a new day, got my new book last week so will use whatever weight i am tonight and use it as my starting weight in my new book

Hve done a meal plan for week & gone shopping!

    Today is a ?? day :o

    B - 2 mullerlights (needed eating up as 14 days OOD!)
    L - 3 Ryvita (heb) & 2 Ryvita (4) with ff cottage cheese (12days OOD!) and ham
D - Mushy Pea curry with chicken & rice

I know there is a lack of superfree for EE, so will use it as a green day and syn (or use other heb for) the chicken and ham - need to go and figure out the values now!

Someone mentions the River Cottage Veg??? I made a lovely meal from the programme

Stuffed squash - cut a 'lid' off the squash & scoop out seeds
Mix together cooked bacon, sweated down leeks, ff fromage frais, mustard powder & hea portion cheese - fill squash with mixture & bake in med oven for about 1hr - gorgeous!

I had some leftover from frais that needed to be eaten (16days OOD!) so used the same principle - minus the bacon & leeks and smoothered over sliced cold potatoes & baked in oven

    Wish me luck for tonight!

Hi everyone, I am biting the bullet and going to my first SW meet this even at 6pm ( I did go once years ago for 3 months and found it so helpful and the options for food suited me - did try the other one but couldn't get on with their points and sins). I have at least 4 stone to lose ( dare not put it in to pounds) and determined I have not just got to lose weight but change the way I eat - I am in bed a lot thanks to illness and tend to eat junk as hubby not a cook and so if cannot get up I eat biscuits, sandwiches or his only meal pizza ( which I do not really like) so this along with a few other challenges I hope will change what I buy, get me into batch cooking and meal planning ( although that will have to be very fluid) and so even on bad days I eat correctly with no rubbish in-between.

I am not sure if I will manage to catch up on whole thread but will give it a try....
