Decluttering your home can not only be therapeutic but profitable too. It’s amazing how much of the so-called junk that can be found at the back of the drawer or under the bed can actually make money.

Here are some ideas for items we all have lying around – and where you can take them if they’ve had their day.

    1. Books

Green Metropolis is a fantastic website for getting rid of your old and unwanted books. All paperbacks and hardbacks are sold at £3.75 and the seller gets £3 of this. Postage comes out of the £3, so with a general paperback costing 92p (under 250g) the seller will receive £2.08. That is £2.08 more than would have been earned putting it in the bin and there is a huge number of readers waiting for books. Green Metropolis is free to join and there are no fees.

    2. CDs, Games and DVDs

MusicMagpie.co.uk is a great site for recycling your unwanted media. Some items fetch as little as 30p, other items can fetch considerably more. It is very easy to check, either by scanning their barcodes with a webcam or by adding the barcode number manually. The great advantage of using Music Magpie is that you send all your items at once and are paid when they are checked, so there’s no waiting for people to buy or send money.

    3. Ink cartridges

It is fairly easy to recycle your used ink cartridges now, with many sites offering to take them off your hands for cash or loyalty points. One commonly used site, CashForCartridges.co.uk will pay up to £4.50 depending on the type of cartridge.

Tesco also recycles ink cartridges. If you are an avid Clubcard point saver this one may be for you, with each cartridge fetching 50 points (and 50p donated to charity). But be aware that it if want to recycle the empty ink cartridges from work you need to get permission; this may be considered theft otherwise.

    4. Mobile phones

There are many sites that offer to give cash for old mobile phones. Using a comparison site such as MobilePhoneRecycling.co.uk will save you time and ensure you get the best deal as it will search these companies for you. Check cash-back sites such as Quidco, to see if the recycling company you choose is offering cash-back.

    5. Clothing

If you have unwanted but good quality garments hanging around, you can either sell these or swap them for something else. Try a site as BigWardrobe.com – this is free to join and you can swap, sell or buy (often at a bargain price).

If you have bulk items you want to get rid of quickly, try somewhere like CashForClothing.co.uk; they pay up to 50p per kilogram for unwanted clothing, shoes (paired), bags, belts and more.

    6. Laptops and gadgets

You can recycle digital cameras, sat navs, laptops, mp3 players and a whole host of other gadgets and earn cash. Check out CompareAndRecycle.co.uk to see how to get the price for your item.

    7. Gold

There are many ‘Cash for gold’ companies around. One which seems to have consistently good feedback is HattonGardenMetals.com. Hatton Garden Metals pay per gram for scrap gold based on the prices set by London Gold Fix. At the time of writing one gram of nine carat gold is worth £12.26. For broken bracelets and unwanted rings, this could be a good way to make some money.

Wow! I sorted out some old knitting mags for eBay, but never thought about old catalogues - I'm sure I've got some of those knocking around!

This is a fantastic thread - keep em coming!

I believe listing catalogues was already mentioned in earlier posts on this thread.

The 'Goldmine' thread is here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/285329

However, it was started in 2006, and ended in 2008, so some of the information re. ebay and how it operates would be out of date. HTH.

I never had the usual email but saw this in the announcements on the ebay website.

***Zero Insertion Fee for 100 listings on 3 and 4 November on eBay.co.uk***

On 3 and 4 November 2012, private sellers who list up to 100 auction-style listing(s) at a starting price from £1.00 or more in an eligible category on eBay.co.uk, will not pay an insertion fee*.
To be eligible for this promotion, you need to:

List your item(s) with either the eBay Mobile applications, Quick Sell or Advanced Sell (Sell Your Item) forms. (Items listed using professional tools, such as Turbo Lister and Selling Manager Pro, are excluded.)
Meet eBay's minimum seller performance standards. Check your Seller Dashboard to see whether your account is eligible.

I must be the only one who doesn't know this :

    Ebay hot news

Private sellers only allowed to list 3 branded items in 30 consecutive days.

Recent restriction introduced within the last month, !!!!!!!! reason given, applies to all private sellers across all top fashion brands.

For the record, my 3 'top fashion brands' were Trutex, British Home Stores, and River Island. I'm sure Philip Green will be delighted with that news.

Can you link us to that new update to the rules TGroom57, I've not had an email to advise that change.
