Our Dyson vacuum cleaner hose broke, which was annoying because it ruined the suction and so the cleaner was useless, even though the rest of it worked fine. A new hose would have cost a fortune, so I bought a new cleaner.

With the old one, I got a screwdriver and took it to pieces and sold them off one-by-one. The motor brought about £25, alone, if I remember right. And each of the cleaning attachments raised a few quid. In all, I think I got about £70, which paid for most of our new cleaner.

If you have got the time, there's almost endless potential to make a profit on stuff on eBay. Anyone who is unemployed and has access to the internet could earn reasonably well by following up on some of the ideas in this thread. For instance, visit the local dump and scavenge all the broken machines, such as vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers, then take them to pieces and sell them on eBay.

Do you mean the external hose? Ours split and when I called Dyson for a spare, they said they would send a new one free of charge. :o

This is a great thread though - I love the tip about old glasses, we have a couple of pairs at home (designer frames) that I had been wondering what to do with.

  • I've mentioned this a while ago over on the eBay forum, but I discovered almost by accident that there's a market for 1970s nylon Y-fronts!
I'd been at a jumble sale and towards the end, heard the magic words "Fill a bag for £1", so I took a bag, put the clothes I wanted for myself and my family in it, and still had plenty of room in the bag so looked around for anything I thought might sell on eBay. When I spotted 2 pairs of vintage undies (used but thankfully clean!) I decided to put them in my bag and try listing them on eBay for fun, to see if anyone would actually buy them. To my surprise, they sold for £10.50.

I am absolutely gobsmacked by this thread - the things that can be sold !!! I am one of those people who always thought "who would buy that ?" and if at all it would be only for 99p so why bother - but some of the stories here have inspired me (a faulty gameboy that was dropped down the toilet ???). I cant wait to get home and ransack the house for stuff to list - not sure whether the wife would be angry (that I am taking the house apart) or happy ( that I am getting rid of clutter for money).

    A couple of questions though
    1) What is the BIN in ebay ?
    2) If I list an item for 99p and it doesnt sell do I still pay the charges on it or will ebay charge only if I sell ?

This is a wonderful post and I see a post of the month nomination for it for inspiring people to start selling junk

Thanks for this thread it's great. I set up an ebay account last night with the intention of getting rid of unwanted christmas present, junk and general bits 'n' bobs. However after reading these posts I think I can sell almost all my possessions (we're having a bit of a life laundry moment in our house).

    i've also have a question, if anyone can answer them I'd be greatful;

Do we have to pay the taxman anything if we sell out unwanted items? I dont want to get landed with a tax bill.

    Regards,
    FatJock
  • Hmm. I've sold all my stuff. I think i'm going to have to go through my boyfriends stuff...

Also - something I've noticed, ladies plus sized underwear to seems to do quite well, with the men...clean and unworn I might add!!!!

  • If you are selling off your old unwanted items there are no tax implications.

They will charge you if you don't sell so ya best off looking for the special days wheres it's only 10p to list things when ya selling bits n bobs, that way if it does'nt sell, ya not losing out on much.
