HP TouchPad

You're now talking about RRP, which is entirely different. Market value (which is what you were originally talking about) is indeed the price that goods would fetch in an auction style format. Touchpads are selling on ebay in excess of the RRP - therefore the market value is higher than the RRP.
I think you'll find that it was another person who raised the concept of "market value" in relation to the prices that highstreet retailers such as PC World, Currys and Dixons have been selling TouchPads in their recently overpriced "bundles".
Auction sites such as eBay are a totally different market altogether.
I'm more interested in what I think the product is actually worth.
The HP TouchPad is now discontinued and therefore has a very limited lifespan. It was on sale a week ago for £89/£115/£159 - therefore that's all it's worth in my eyes and that's all I'm willing to pay for it. That's its market value for me.
Other people can pay what they want for a TouchPad - I'm just trying to track down products at non-rip off prices (from major retailers rather than auction sites) which will actually save people money.0 -

I want to buy a Ferrari for £10, it's not going to happen though!
The price they are going for now on eBay is what people are willing to pay for them, therefore that is their market value. DSG are selling below market value, so represent good value for money.
You can decide whatever price you think a TouchPad is worth, it doesn't mean you should slag off a retailer because it's worth more than you think it is. What would you think if I came round to your house and offered you £10 for your car when it's worth £10,000 and then started giving you grief because you didn't want to sell it to me for £10? You'd probably think I was unreasonable and stupid.0 -
Its starting to get a bit wacky this thread...
While HP reduced their RRP to £89 to FIRESALE them off... Its hard to argument to say the actual hardware isn't worth a great deal more. Its spec and quality of build is very similar (if not better in some ways) than tablets selling in the £330 to £600 range. I prefer the Touchpad to the Xoom.... The sound on the Touchpad is miles better than my iPad...
Value is whatever the market dictates and not a retailer... If you can get the product for less than the value the market is dictating then you have a bargain / good deal surely ?
I don't think you can really use the RRP for a product that has been discontinued and is out of stock at the supplier. You know at one point you could get those Star War figures really cheap. I bet you won't find one for the original RRP
Anyway, another idea I came up with last night. I wonder if in the future you will be able to get Windows 8 to run on it. Interesting prospect.
Finally, has anyone received their bundle purchase yet ?0 -

Auction sites show the true market value, retailers have to rely a little more on guesswork to try and set an appropriate market value price for their products. For a couple of days, the market value was at the prices you quote above. However, that moment has passed and the current market value is higher. By all means, carry on looking for a new one at the prices above, but I doubt you'll find one, as the market has decided that they are worth more. Whether DSG has priced them at the correct market value is another discussion, but unfortunately for you the current market value is higher than the value you place on a Touchpad.0 -
HP announced that their final batch of around 200,000 TouchPads (which will only be available to the North-American market at the end of October, apparently) will be sold at the previous/original firesale prices that HP set for US retailers (e.g. $99 for a 16GB TouchPad).
Whether the highstreet retailers in the UK want to overcharge their UK consumers is entirely up to them - but why change the habit of a lifetime?
As far as I am concerned it's up to each individual to determine what they want to pay for a discontinued product that's been on sale for much less than DSGi or eBay are currently offering them for sale. It's not up to the people posting here to determine that for them.
Back on topic: I'm keeping my ear to the ground to see if any more firesale stock appears for UK consumers. I'll keep you posted.0 -
Prices are coming down now thanks to the huge numbers of people who bought just to ebay. Cheapest one in the "completed listings" over the last 2 weeks (uk sellers only, brand new boxed condition) was £150 for a 32 GB version, inc P&P. That's not such a great profit from the retail cost.0

What you are willing to pay and what you have to pay are two entirely separate things. I'm not telling you what you are willing to pay, I'm telling you that the market value is more than you are willing to pay. Strangely you have a problem with people telling you what they are worth but you seem to want purport the myth the retailers are ripping people off when clearly they aren't.0 -

I refer you to my post above regarding the firesale prices and those prices charged in the DSGi bundles - total ripoff.
Must remember to stop feeding the trolls...0 -

It is called supply and demand.
Originally there was a large supply of TouchPads and very limited demand due to high prices. Then the price was lowered in the fire sale and demand outstripped supply as the price was well below what the TouchPad is actually worth. Now the balance has been found and TouchPads are selling at the price people are willing to pay for them. Nobody is getting ripped off, in fact consumers are getting a very high spec tablet at a very good price.0 -
