what about looking at GI style diets, like the south beach etc. They operate on a low good carb high protein prinicipal and are particularly good for diabetes.Weight loss to date - 8st 13lbs :j0

I have been on a self imposed low carb diet for just over 2 months and have lost about 1 stone. Prior to that I tried other diets including GI and put on more weight probably due to the required snacks.
I have read several books on the subject and low carb can mean anything from about 20 to 100g of carb a day. One book the high protein diet suggests a max of 40 to 60 a day. I would suggest try 40 and see if you lose weight if not reduce a bit until you do.
The point of the diet is to reduce the need for insulin. All carbs including so called healthy fruit and juice stimulate insulin production which in turn stores any extra carbs as fat. The lower the carbs in your diet the less likely you will put on weight and more likely you will lose it.
It is difficult not eating bread potatoes, pasta or grain products but on the whole the diet is healthy in spite of what people say because you will eat more veg.
1 slice of bread is 17g carb an apple 13, banana 20 but most vegetables including avocado are only about 2 -3 carbs a portion. The high protein part of the diet is the best part because it stops you feeling hungry.
I think it is probably a bit more difficult on a veggie diet but not impossible especially if you eat fish and dairy.
I usually have cooked breakfast using eggs, bacon, sausages (sosmix), tomatoes, mushrooms, omelettes etc in various combinations, kippers, smoked haddock and one for the vegies, Yeo valley natural full fat organic yoghurt with toasted seeds (1tbs pumpkin, sunflower and 1tsp sesame) + raspberries sometimes. Bio yogurt eats up the carbs so not so many as it says.
Lunches: cauli cheese, sandwiches made of lettuce leaves (little gem or romaine) tuna mayo, salmon, prawns etc, hm beefburger with fried egg, soup and protein eg nuts or cheese. avocado pear and nuts with salad, cougette or other veg frittata
Dinner, meat fish, stew, with veg but no potatoes peas etc. I use roast butternut squash and cauli mashed with double cream as an alternative to mash - you can also use cauli as rice with curries. Most veg is OK just not starchy veg.
You have to keep away from all fruit and fruit juice -take 2 - 3 500mg vit c tablets to make up. Berries straw, rasp or blue are OK and you can have double cream on this diet.
Nuts and seeds add extra protein and essential fats - measure out into 25g daily portions as snack foods.
Rather than use sweetners and try to imitate puds etc try to give up sugar in all it's forms as it is the worst thing possible for health generally. Eating good quality protein helps to curb hunger and you can get used to different drinks like herb teas. Try a slice of fresh root ginger and slice of lemon in hot water and vary drinks more.
This is a low carb forum which is good
