I have decided to reduce the amount of pasta, bread, rice etc in my diet. No its not the atkins diet. I eat plenty of fruit, veg and the odd treat or two.
I was wondering what ideas you had for meals, especially breakfast - especially ideas that don't involve eggs. I love eggs but not every day.
My thoughts so far:
Mainly plenty of meat (tuna, chicken, beef, salmon etc) with roasted veg or salad
Soups (Lentil, mixed bean etc)

Not all carbs are bad. These are the carbs without the added refined sugar: for instance, fruits, whole grain breads, grains, Brown rice and vegetables. These healthy carbohydrates (called complex carbs) contain naturally occurring sugars that the body can easily and slowly metabolize for balanced brain function, mood attitude and useful energy. They are not stripped of their nutrients.
For breakfast normal Porridge is great, ie Scotts Oats. Don't buy the instant crap though.
When choosing carbs look for the word 'Whole' as your main ingredient - Whole grain, Whole meal.0 -
I often have ham wraps for breakfast. Get a slice of ham and put some low fat cheese in a line down the middle. Wrap it up and eat:T
I tend to use cheese spread but have also done it with something like gouda and just lay the cheese slice on the ham and then wrapped them with the ham on the outside.MFIT No. 810 -
Why are you doing this? Is it for weight loss, or energy and liveliness reasons?
Ive done atkins, and it is fab for weightloss.
But it completely negates the good balanced diet info and there is simply not enough fibre in it for the body to work properly ( hence the full satiated feeling, and not wanting to eat) Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I have just been thinking about what I eat. When I ate a high carb diet I felt hungry all the time. Things like having one piece of toast followed by another, by another etc. But someone suggested I need to include more protein in my diet to feel more full.
A few years ago I switched to wholegrains (brown bread, rice, wholemeal pasta) and never looked back and now I wanted ideas to include more protein in my diet.
But now I eat loads of fruit and veg and I still love my porridge. But I wanted to cut out my obsession with bread (in particular).0 -
Can I ask a question re wholemeal pasta - I can only ever find fusli shaped is there a spagetti etc version available ?0

Hi All,
I need to ask for some advice pleaseI've posted on the OS dieting forum but was hoping maybe there were some of the general OS readers that might be able to help me out???
I've just been to my dr to check the results of my fasting blood test - all was ok but my bp is still too high and my weight is off the scale. Shes referred my to a dietician and has asked in the meantime I cut out bread entirely and follow a low carb/high protein diet. Shes says thats easier said than done when you are a vegetarian but that I need to give it a go.
So I need to ask for your collective help in identifying things I am able to eat. For a start I dont know what constitutes a 'high' level for carbs, is it a certain % per 100gm? And protein she has siad should come mainly from eggs and nuts/seeds rather than always pulses as they will bulk my tummy out too much without giving me the right level of protein.
I know the dietician will help with this but with the NHS waiting lists I dont hold out a lot of hope for a quick apt. I plan on keeping a food diary from now until the apt as I am assuming shes going to as me to do that anyway and am hoping if I have one with me we can save time and straight down to it.
Any advice HUGELY appreciated.

Hi kiwichick . I have also just had the results of my fasting blood test and, like yourself, have got high bp and have put on loads of weight.
I have also been informed I have Type 2 diabetes  . I have done some research (on the web) and it seems a low carb diet is the way to go to control the diabetes. I too, could do with some recipe ideas, etc to get me started. I admit that I am more than a little bit scared about this news. I know nothing about low carb diets, but realise that this disease can be totally controlled by diet. Hope someone out there can help.
On an OS note, I am a bit cheesed off that I have just invested in a breadmaker and haven't even used it yet!"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718
