  • Take your broken key along to a Master Locksmith (MLA) you can find a listing on their website or yellow pages under locksmiths. They will decode your broken key and cut a replacement blade to fit into your existing top (using your existing chip) for under £20. DONT buy a blank key if ebay, because there are so many variations you will probably get the wrong key/chip combination. Also dont use a high street key cutter/cobbler e.g. Timpson. They do not have the skill or knowledge of a qualified locksmith.

My key isn't broken I just want a spare, but thanks anyway. I think I'll go to the market guy tomorrow; he knows what he's doing, we've had keys from him before.

On all VAG motors after 2000 (i think it was 2000) they give the advice to drive off straight away!
GabbaGabbaHey was poss wrong with the statement "all" but he was pretty close as there is prob only 1 or 2 that dont say this in the manuals if any at all.

search google for yourself and see how many people(who know a thing or two) say not to warm car up or start here http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080109/OPINION03/801090328/1149/rss26

As for long term effects im reading on most new cars it is worse to warm the car up than just drive straight off

Correct, just about every manual tells you to drive off as soon as the windows are clear.

Noticed this thread was a bit old, but I think Alfa keys can be up to £300 now !

I have a 156, do a search on 'key' on the owners websites like .156.net, and .alfaowner.com there are some how to guides out there.

Keys are a common Alfa issue, one of mine packed up last year. If you are handy the fix is easy, and possibly works for other makes. The common problem is the micro switche(s) either become dry jointed, or fail. This is the switch under the key fob button that operates the remote. My key fob was damaged as well, some previous owner (donkey) super glued the two fob mouldingds together. So I bought a s/h key off ebay, swapped one of the good micro switches over on to my key PCB, and swapped the case over, now works fine.

A word of caution though, modern cars have electronic coding in keys, this is usually by a transponer chip, (the bit that can need progragming for your car). On the Alfa key the transponder chip is not fitted to the PCB but just clipped indside the case, so if you swap parts out of another key you must use the transponder key, and obviously the key blade as well.

If you don't fancy having a go there is a chap on ebay who will do this and other repairs to Alfa keys, you can also find spare micro switches on ebay as well. Hope this helps.

    Hi all

Just an additonal question..i have a v reg astra , the key has snapped in half , i have both parts , the fob only controls the central locking , nothing else , and hasnt been working for months anyway , so i have been opening the door with the key...i am hoping a locksmith can somehow copy the key ? as when i call the emergency type people they all ask , have you got both parts of the key and then quote £120 = vat

surley its just a case of setting the cast for my key and copying it (he says hoping!)
