When making apple pies/crumbles for the freezer don't throw out the skins and cores. Cook in a little water until soft, push through a sieve and freeze in ice cube trays for use as apple sauce when you next have pork.
Ooh good wartime type tip :T

I can remember my Mum doing this! Her apple puree was a cure all ;) If we were feeling off colour or recovering from a bug this is what she gave us to start us eating again. It always worked too.:T

That's right apple puree is a brilliant food for people recovering from illness ;)

I've just posted a recipe/method for rissoles on the wartime thread. This must be a classic leftover dish. I'm really looking forward to them for tea tonight. I'm off to make a Duke Pudding with leftover bread;)

I've been listening to the news today and it states that loads of food is being thrown away each day.....how many meals us O/S'ers could make from this food.

Anyway, i'm fairly good at planning and using my food up, but i am guilty of throwing away a small amount. Therefore i'm setting myself a challenge:-
I'm going to see how many days i can go without throwing any food away.

At the moment i have two nearly black bananas and four wrinkled plums to use and four yoghurts that have two days before their sell by date. I need to think about what i can do with these.

Would anyone like to join me with this challenge?

There is a recipe on here somewhere for banana bread and banana muffins.

DH has been listening to the radio this morning and was aghast when he heard that one bag of food out of three was wasted. He also heard some one giving a recipe using chicken bones for soup.

We had some baked beans in the fridge from yesterday so I had them for brekkie and DH and I have just had a speckled banana each.

There are a few small cooked new potatoes leftover so might have them in a salad or an omelet.

I do have other food but want to use up what is there.

Yes I'll join. Going away for the weekend so will be frantically going through the fridge and freezing/using all that I can. Already chopped and froze red and orange peppers yesterday. Got leeks to chop and freeze and got a pack of mushrooms that have been there a few days to either cook and freeze or hopefully they'll last till next week

I will happily join you in this challenge, most of my cooking is based on what needs to be used up quickly as we get a fruit and veg box delivered weekly. You can freeze bananas and use them up later in banana bread, I have just made up some this morning using bananas from the freezer. With just 2 of us most of the time I have learnt to cut down recipes for instance the 4 plums would make a small fruit crumble, or stew with a bit of sugar ready to add to some porridge tomorrow or mix in with the yogurts. I have two cakes that need to be sliced up so that some of the slices can be wrapped and frozen ready for the lunch boxes. My problem is lack of space in the freezers!

Still waiting for the food dehydrator I ordered last week, then I could dry some of the surplus apples into slices.

It is shocking how much food people waste!

I don't throw away anything if I can help it BUT...

What do I do with disastrous cooking attempts?:o

I don't mean efforts that are edible if drowned in tomato sauce, I mean the curry I left on too long and is now so bitter I choked on the first taste  Obviously I need to get better at cooking though

but I will join for the sake of eating things before they go off
