Well I can honestly say that nothing edible gets chucked out in my house as I was brought up during WW 2 and the austerity of the 1950s.Rationing made sure that everything was used up if at all possible. My old Mum always said that if you throw food away you might just as well open your purse and empty into the dustbin.
I had two speckly bananas in the fruit bowl so I made a banana custard this morning .One for pudding after dinner tonight, and one for tomorrow .
I am having the last of the salad stuff for dinner tonight with a couple of really chunky chicken thighs that I found in the freezer this morning. I am determined to spend as little as possible this week, and so far since Monday have only spent £2.99 on milk and eggs.No more shopping needed, as my freezer is full, and I have umpteen tins in my store cupboard .I shall be very creative for the nxt couple of weeks as I am going on Holiday at the end of next month so I shall save my pennies for that instead.
I found a huge tin of Marvel dried milk in the cupboard has anyone used it for milk puddings at all? as I have quite a bit of rice, semolina ect that I want to use up. I have to keep my protien intake up at the moment so I make a pudding every day. Does it really work well with puds? Plus if I have a pud after dinner I don't need such a big dinner if you see what I mean, double savings.I think when you see how those poor folk in Burma are coping the thought of throwing food out is almost obscene0 -
oooh i have just subscribed to this thread. I hate throwing food away, but never know what to do with it when it is past it's best. I am getting better though on not buying to much in the first place. Could people put their recipes on too please.Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we should dance....0

I often have a 'vegetable omelette' for breakfast. I use any little bits of cooked veg left from the night before (or the night before before) like carrots, cabbage etc. and slowly warm them up in olive oil before lobbing a couple of beaten eggs on the top and cooking them through.
With a chunk of homemade bread, it's surprisingly delish.I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

I will also join the challenge although I am pretty good at using up leftovers. I hate waste and can't afford to throw anything away as I am on Incapacity benefit and live alone...this means I pay the same standing charges as multi person families and it all adds up to a lot of expense before I even use a drop of water or turn on a light!! I am also trying to get rid of debt from the past as well as save for a car..a banger of some sort...too little money so much to buy!!0

Tomorrow I must find a use for 3 beetroots that have been hanging about in the fridge for a while.
Try some creamed beetroot - give the skins a scrub, then roast in the oven with some seasoning, olive oil, herbs if you've got some (dried are fine) and garlic.
When cooked and cooled, peel off the skins then blitz with some of the garlic and cream, yoghurt or creme fraiche, depending on what needs using up. Season again - this can be frozen in small portions and is great as an accompaniment to roasted meats! Serve hot or cold.Mortgage Free as of 03/07/2017 :beer:0 -
Pretty much all my leftovers get recycled as hubbys lunch the next day:D He's ex-military and has a cast iron stomach:o
All veggie peelings go to our Birds or Rabbit.
I do probably throw away a little more than i should, though i'm getting better, will definately make more of an effort:beer:The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
DH and I were appalled at the radio report on this. We do try to use up leftovers from the fridge etc. My problem is that DH has suddenly lost his appetite, so each evening some of his dinner is left on the plate. Hopefully he'll regain his appetite or start to reduce what he cooks - he's recently been diagnosed with angina and the appetite loss seems to be linked to the pills he's been prescribed.
Anyway, my mission this w/e will be to list everything in the fridge and freezer to ensure that nothing there is wasted in future. As someone said earlier, the disaster in Burma ought to focus us on the obsenity of wasted food.Resolution:

Hi
I'd like to join in with this. I don't tend to throw much away but have been guilty in the past of not noticing stuff lurking at the back of the fridge.:o This might help stop that.
Someone mentioned ham, i usually freeze mine if i've got too much ( especially when it's reduced to 10p).0 -
We have zero waste,we have 3 waste disposal units(dogs)  any left overs are mixed in with their food. They are all very slim dogs with shiny coats.;) If its not sent to land fill then I dont class it as wasteful.:D
No waste food from our household is sent to land fill either. But I still feel we could do even better eating things ourselves rather than presenting it to our compost heap, pets and/or wildlife. My main bugbear at present is cat food: my OH is in charge of feeding the cats, and positively spoils them - as a result we have a local family of magpies thriving on rejected cat food! True, nothing is wasted, but it still doesn't feel quite right to me."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0
