I did not throw out much food yesterday, but I did throw out some mashed potato. OH had cooked too much and rather than keeping it to one side and freezing it I foolishly served it up.
I frequently serve up too much mash. This is what I do with it next morning - add enough flour (about a tbsp per serving) to make a dough. Shape into a burger-sized cake and fry for breakfast. Delicious fried in bacon fat and served with bacon. My kids love this for breakfast.

Mash is also good just fried slowly so the bottom goes all brown and crispy.

Oh Dear! I don't know what was wrong, but 2 loaves in a row last weekend came out really shallow and hard. We struggled through one of them, but have just found the end of the second looking rather hairy! I went to find it to make into breadcrumbs, but too late! Was going to make treacle tart.

    Hi all,
what a good challenge. I can honestly say that there`s no waste anymore in this house.
There did used to be as every week before going to do the weekly shop i used to go through the fridge and throw away things left from the week before.

These days everything is used up, as Squeaky has already said any veg gets made into soup and if it`s not too tasty the taste gets disguised with herbs and spices.

Fruit goes into smoothies and things like mash get frozen for another day.
I always try to save a bit of meat if we have a roast and wrap it in foil to freeze for stir fries.

The dogs used to get a fair bit of leftovers but these days there`s never anything at all for them.

I can`t believe how much food is wasted every day:eek:

I find that once a week isn't sufficient to keep from wasting stuff in the fridge. I try and glance round every day, but at least every couple of days.

I was guilty of throwing food away before starting the grocery challenge but now that I make mealplans that no longer happens. I now make soup every week instead of throwing old veggies out and check cupboards and freezer before I shop. If I see cheap cakes etc at end of day I freeze them and I do make sure I do not shop on empty stomach.;)

I am guilty of throwing stuff away even though I meal plan.

I have two eggs on the fridge dated the 2nd of May not sure if to use them or not.

I compost all my peelings. And try keep portion sizes down.

But I have to be careful as my husband is immune surpressed so don't want to make him really ill.

And that report is 237 pages long

But I will try and be a good girl and if we change our mind about a meal either cook and re-freeze of re-jig the meal plans.

    Hi calley,

For the eggs try the Fresh Egg Test before you bin them. If the egg floats it's best not to use it.
