I had a pot of the stewed apple I made last week to use up - I'd got it out of the freezer to have with yogurt then realised there wasn't enough yogurt left to make it worthwhile! Made a sponge mix tonight and spread it over the apple, baked in the oven for 25 minutes it make a gorgeous apple pudding, and my OH even continued to "no waste" theme by using up the last bit of the clotted cream we brought back from Devon!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

I find the biggest danger for me is that I buy a bargain in the shop if it is a good offer, even if it is not something I would really use... Martin's tip to really look at if an offer is worth it and not to just grab whatever has a little yellow discount sign is a good one.
I heard a good quote which said that a man will spend £2 on a £1 item he really needs, a woman will spend £1 on a £2 item she will never use. Definitely sums me upGod is good, all the time

Hi, I would like to join too if I may. I often have bananas going too spotty for my taste so I chop them up and freeze them in bags. When I feel like something sweet I blitz them up with a little milk and it magically transforms into creamy, sweet tasting "ice cream", without having to add sugar or cream or anything else. I don't remember where I got this recipe but I've been doing this for years.:j0

INGREDIENTS
14 fl. oz. (400 g) tin of condensed milk
8 fl. oz. of Scotch whisky
7 fl. oz. (250 ml) carton of UHT long-life single cream
6 fl. oz. (170 g) tin of evaporated milk (eg. "Ideal")
6 - 8 teaspoons of coffee essence (eg. "Camp")
(None of the amounts are critical, and the sizes of the tins and cartons have changed and/or been metricated since the recipe was originally published.)
METHOD
Pour all the ingredients into a 2 pint (1 litre) jug or bowl. Use the whisky to wash out all of the thicker ingredients from their containers. Mix. Pour. Drink.
I made it with a friend, we ommitted the condensed milk and worked some cocoa in. After an evening of trial and error we concluded that a teaspoon of sugar made all the difference. It was fine after 3 days, but didn't last any longer lol.
Am now wondering whether you could make it into ice lollies as an after bbq party dessert. Would it separate? Would it freeze?0 -

I've had such a busy week! Not really had time post on here but have been reading it - we're all doing so well!
I'm so chuffed - the only thing I've thrown out is the last bit of homemade salsa which I'd taken to work and there was too much. It was made from things that were heading for the bin, so it's not to bad. Not bad for a week!
Few things to use up today, I've got some carrots left, think I'm going to blanche and freeze these because I've still got loads of soup in freezer! There are a couple of half empty tins in fridge - butter beans and sweetcorn so think I'll use them up in a salad for tea.
Today is shopping day and once again nothing to throw out woohoooo!!!!
Just talking about 'other peoples shopping' a friend of mine spends £200 a WEEK in tesco's to feed 2 adults and 3 young kids!!! I couldn't believe it, but then she couldn't belive that I spend £30 a week to feed 2 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs! I suppose it's easy when you have then money to do it though! why do we need to blanch veg before we freeze it?

When the water in food freezes, it stops much of the cellular activity that normally causes spoiling. But there are certain enzymes in vegetables that can continue their nefarious deeds in the quiet and dark of the freezer. Blanching — either steaming or boiling the food briefly — destroys the enzymes that cause the loss of nutritional value and flavor. Onions, peppers, and herbs do not need to be blanched. Squash, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin should be fully cooked before freezing. All other vegetables should be blanched.
To blanch by boiling, use at least a gallon of water for a pound of vegetables. Put the vegetables in a wire basket, submerge them completely in the boiling water, cover with a lid, and begin timing. To blanch by steaming, put the vegetables in a steamer basket and suspend it above an inch or two of boiling water. Cover the pot, and begin timing as soon as steam starts to escape from under the lid. With either method, shake the basket a couple of times to ensure that all vegetable surfaces are exposed to the heat. After the allotted time, remove the basket, and plunge the vegetables into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. Once cool, remove them, drain thoroughly, and package for freezing.
