Well I was doing well, ages since I'd threw anything out then noticed a 'wet bottom' in my fridge this morning, 3 kiwis gone off that I'd bought on Friday, not happy!

    Carrots, blanche and freeze
One day I might be more organised...........

    Hi,
just finished Sunday lunch and we had boiled cabbage. Due to the fact that I have been reading this thread avidly I saved the water it was boiled in but now I don't know what to use it for or indeed if it is reusable. :o

Hi, my mum used to give us the cabbage water to drink, she reckoned it was so healthy and we loved it as kids. My Oh thinks it's the weirdest thing ever and I've kinda got out of the habit now!

    Hi guys!

This is a great thread - we try to waste as little food as possible, and there are some wonderful ideas on here to minimise that further. Our weakest point still seems to be fresh fruit and veg - we have to get out of the habit of buying too much. Speaking of which, we have half a bag of spinach left over from a salad, but no idea of how to use it up; any ideas?

Also lurking in the fridge, amongst other things, are:
A bunch of spring onions that are looking rather sorry for themselves
Some peppers that won't last much longer
    A lonely old carrot
Half a jar of pesto and half a jar of black bean sauce that have been open for a while
    3 or 4 tomatoes
    A few cooked new potatoes
    An aubergine

We've also got a few sweet potatoes that I'm not sure what to do with as we probably won't be having a roast in the near future, as well as MORE new potatoes.

Any ideas as to what we might do with any of this would be greatly appreciated - we don't usually have this much left over, but I've had exams for the last few weeks so it's been a bit hectic! I hope that I can get further inspiration from this thread now that I have more time. :T
  • Well, I am very proud of myself. We are off on hols tomorrow and instead of binning a bag full of stuff that isnt going to last I have precisely nothing to throw away :-D. Used up all the whoopsied tomatoes by roasting them with the left over red onions, garlic, olive oil, balsamic and herbs. Blitzing, seiving and freezing. 2 bunches of spring onions used in salsa and with left over mash in fishcakes and bacon and sweetcorn potato cakes. Left over bread, cubed and frozen for croutons. Dying nectarines, poached and made into crumble. I'm loving this challenge.
Eat food, not edible food-like items. Mostly plants.

Right, I've blanched and frozen my left over carrots, had some tomato, spring onion, onion, celery and some corriander to use up so I chucked it all in a blender and made a salsa type thing, it'll be nice to top a jacket pot with! Spudnik, maybe you could do this with your left over salad bits? I've also got loads of bread flour so have been baking own bread to!

I did a stock check of food in freezer and pantry tonight - I have so much!!! I need to save some money this month so I really need to make the most of what I have!

I've only thrown out 2 sticks of very very very sad celery! Oh and some very nasty tasting beetroot soup!

I was given 4 salmon steaks today, I'm not really that keen on it, does anyone know of a recipie that would mask the taste of it?

Spudnik - could you mash the sweet potato and freeze?

Queen of string - how do you make croutons?

Fish cakes, quiche, salmon and broccoli in a sauce then used in a pie or with pasta, thai steamed salmon, fish curry, mixed with other fish in a fish pie

I second lil_me - they are so easy to freeze. And you can mash them with or without swede and freeze that too. On thawing though, it's slightly watery. Or you could make carrot soup - there's a recipe on here plus other interesting info on what to do with carrots :D Including carrot ice cream
