you could make an orange sauce to go over icecream or even a main meal like pork

not sure what you have in cupboards but ideas are orange sorbet, rice pudding with orange, orangeade (ie lemonade but with what you have)

there is an old orange sponge cake receipe on hubpages.com which claims to use the whole orange

  • I just want to say thanks to everyone on this thread - its really inspired me to make more of my leftovers. I used to chuck ancient veg/fruit/bread etc, leftover meat/cooked food just got snacked on, what a waste. I'm now much more into the idea of using them up in proper meals - thanks. Last night cut the last of the meat off a bacon joint and froze it to go into a chicken& ham pie or pasta something in future, in the past we would have just eaten it as a snack while we were waiting for dinner to cook.

Should do wonders for our waist-lines as well. :-)

I've never made it but have eaten it and its a really refreshing dessert especially if the meal is heavy.

Basic receipe: 750 ml of water, 200g sugar, 3 med to large oranges and 2 egg whites.

put water, rind and sugar into saucepan and bring to the boil, turn down and simmer for 4-5 mins. Let it cool down.
    Add the juice from oranges
Put in a container and freeze until half frozen.
whisk egg whites until stiff and then whisk these into the half frozen sorbet.
put back in freezer until frozen solid.

By refering to the lemonade I meant to home make, ie water, sugar, and the oranges juice. There are loads more receipes on the internet for lemonade compared to orangeade - but its the same idea.

To day I found some rather sad looking spring onion and mushrooms, and a load of cherry tomatoes I swear I got in for xmas but were perfectly fine. Also got a packet of mince out of the freezer that I got at xmas for 10p, but I need the room in the freezer as my mate has given me a pork leg. I just threw everything in a frying pan with some left over gravy for yesterday and made a chilli con carni. Was quite yummy especially as I am not keen on mince. Even better there is still half a frying pan full (although no rice left), so the OH can have a stuffed pepper with it in, and I will probably have it on a jacket tate!

Wish I had been more organised earlier in the week had half a pre-cooked chicken left over, used some of it in some salad wraps for the OH's packed lunch. Was going to freeze the left overs but couldn't find the chicken. Have just found it tonight, OH had 'stored' it in the oven! So sadly it has made its way to the bin, I now feel so wasteful as there was at least another two meals to be had off it and could have boiled the bones up to make some gravy.

    Pork & apple casserole.

    Chop pork into small pieces.
    Peel & chop 1 apple
Peel & finely chop 1 onion.
    Place in a casserole dish.
Cover with water mixed with a veg stock cube, black pepper. oregano & a teaspoon of paprika.

Cook in the oven for about an hour on gas 5.
Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.
  • Hi all, could do with a few ideas please :) After tonight's tuna pasta bake I should have half a can of sweetcorn left over. Any ideas on a cool way to use it up?

    Thanks in advance.
