I use mashed swede in place of mashed potato on top of shepherds pie. You can also mix the swede with potato half and half- that is yummy too.:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0

Love Food Hate Waste is the ‘Waste Not Want Not’ of the modern day, providing handy tips, advice and recipes for leftovers to help everyone waste less food.
Around a third of all the food we buy ends up being thrown in the bin and most of this could have been eaten.
Reducing food waste is a major issue and not just about good food going to waste; wasting food costs the average family £420 a year and has serious environmental implications too.
If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 5 cars off the road."You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need"

I am planning to do the lovefoodhatewaste golden shepherds pie tonight, using a pck of lamb mince from freezer and a pack of reduced lamb mince, but recipe requires 1.35kg of mince, and I have 900g. I'd like to make it up using soya mince from freezer - has anyone ever mixed vegemince and the real stuff? does it work?!0

I made some yesterday using defrosted LO xmas turkey, will they be safe to eat cold after being cooked ? (it means the turkey has been cooked and cooled twice)
I get a bit confusedwith the rules around reheating and eating previously cooked frozen meat. Can anyone help?
BTW I had one for tea and it was delish.;)
Check out the lovefoodhatewaste website for tips on leftover meat here: http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/storage_and_tools . someone has submitted a piece on leftover roast meat frozen then cooked again as shepherds pie - doesn't mention cooling down again but might help!0 -

We had a big bag of soya mince (dried stuff) about 18 months ago and used it regularly, especially in HM burgers as a substitute for rusk and to bulk up the meat - you really couldn't tell once it was cooked. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -

Well considering the number of us on here who bulk up mince dishes using porridge oats, oatmeal, or grated carrot, I would think your soya since would be a positive touch of luxury! Seriously, yes, it will be fine. In fact, the vegetarian substitute stuff will probably be improved by being mixed with some proper food for a change!:rotfl:

:T excellent! Am cooking it up right now...would you also add breadcrumbs to pad out?0 -
me and the rugrats and my mum went out for a lovely sunday luch today (her treat!) but there was loads of veg left, in a seperate bowl, no gravy or mash etc stuck to it! I asked if they could wrap it up for me:embarasse my poor mum was mortified, but I thought hey, what the hell, it will do for my supper! yummy bubble and squeak!
so anyway, went to my aunty's after for a drink and just caught her chucking out the remains of a beef joint:eek: there was LOADS of meat left on it.. I seriously need to chat with my family about some mse ways!!!
so my question is..if I bung the remains of the beef and pub veg in the slow cooker (carrots/cauliflower/cabbage) with some gravy, how long would I need to put it on for?
the beef was cooked in the oven, so not very tender like casserole or anything..so thought might put it in for longer then chuck the veg in for the last hour or so....
such a long post for such a short question!
lisa xx:eek: drowning in housework....0 -
The slow cooker won't be any good for reheating already cooked food. You need to get it piping hot. Best plan is your bubble and squeak idea with chunks of beef added.0
