No Wan Light

Options
Hi Hope that some one might be able to help I have N T L broadband and daughter has just got a laptop for her bedroom. We bought a D-Link D1-524 Router and followed the instructions but we do not manage to get the Wan Light to light up. We went through their tech help desk and spoke to lady with a foreign accent and after about 30 mins advised us on different things but still no luck! We exchanged the unit today and still no light. Any body got any ideas???? We have taken the U S B cable out of the back of our modem as advised by some one but still no luck
Nice to save.

Presuming you have internet access try the D link website.
The helpdesks are virtually useless and cost a fortune to use and you very rarely get anywhere using them

Your last sentence is very worrying! You definitely don't use the USB cable. Have you turned the wireless on? You need to check the box Enable AP on the wireless settings page.

when first installing the router we connected the two cables, one to the computer and one to the modem, as instructed by the cd-rom. Nothing was mentioned about removing the USB cable from the modem, Since then, we've been informed the USB cable should be removed. Where abouts would I find the wireless setting page on my computer? As you can see I don't know a lot about computers, so please bear with me. Ta

You need to enter the address of your router into your browser i.e. http://192.168.1.1

Then log-in to the router as per the user guide instructions and go to the wireless page.

My d-link router when i log into it has a wizard tab, i would definitely try this if you get into the router set up and do it step by step, this is much easier than using the easy install cd that ships with the router itself.
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!

Entering the routers address should not cause the browser to close. You are using Internet Explorer aren't you? If you haven't got the user guide to refer to which should be on the CD, download it from their website. It is easy to set-up once you can log-in to the routers configuration screens.

The WAN light would indicate the router has an internet connection, so the lack of a light suggests a problem between the modem and router.

Before trying wireless I would make sure you can access the internet with a wire.

    NTL modem - Ethernet cable - Router - Ethernet cable - Computer/laptop

Also, have you tried turning the power off the NTL modem and back on again? I've found it needs this sometimes when attaching different computers to the modem.

D-Link routers have a WLAN LED and LAN LED's for each of the four Ethernet ports.

These routers are very easy to set up if people would only read the supplied instructions!

Espresso : I am using internet explorer. Yet any number i type into the addres bar i.e 34.236.32, causes it to close
Winny : The sequence you suggest is the one that the router uses while we try to get a WAN light? After a phonecall with NTL they also suggested disconnecting the power from the modem, which also did not help.

PS - the supplied instructions only tell us to insert the CD-Rom
