my dd won't drink fruitshoots at all - we got her one with the debenhams restaurant kids meal (that or fizzy drinks!) and she said it was yucky so we tried it and looked at the ingredients  .

She has mainly water, loves the sports tops, but diluted squash or fruit juice with meals.

I'm also not keen on the sugar free juices - would much rather they had normal old sugar than all the artificial sweeteners around. What really gets me is that some medicines (you know who you are) are now only coming in sugar free versions. grrr.
  • My son (3 today) drinks a lot of fresh juices. I buy the 100% not from concentrate juice from Asda (its only about £1.30 much cheaper than Tropicana and those brands!) and dilute it a little bit with water so its not quite as acidy.

I had a talk from a Colgate representative at my baby massage class when my son was a few motnhs old and they said that everything is bad for the teeth except water, as the acid attacks the enamel on the tooth surface.

My own personal view is that yes, this sounds feasible and I dont necessarily disagree, however I drank juice as a child and my teeth and perfect straight white. Nothing wrong.

If I was to argue the benefits of taking in the Vitamins of freshly squeezed juice, or the detriment of the juice on the teeth Id rather my son have the vitamins and take my chances on the teeth. At least I can get his cosmetic surgery on his teeth if it all goes wrong, I can't buy him good health surgery! lol

a tip I found worked well to get my ds to drink more water. Buy a drinking bottle with a sports cap on it (you can get them with your kids fave character on) fill the bottle up with water before you go to bed, and leave it over night with the sports cap in the open position. All the chemicals that are added to the water disperse overnight and the water tastes better. My ds used to refuse to drink water because he said it tasted funny, I read this tip in a mag tried it and he happily drinks the water out of his bottle all the time now. (so much so I had to buy him a couple more sports bottles too keep up with demand lol) I only ever leave the bottles over night though, first thing in the morning I close the caps and put them in the fridge.

I even tried a Brita filter but he still prefers the water that's been left overnight.

That's what you do with the water for a fishtank too, it gets rid of the chlorine which is harmful for fish :D

My little one only drank milk or water until she was 2. But then she started going to parties etc and discovered orange juce. I get her 100% orange juice in cartons and she has one of these a day to add to her 5 a day count. The rest of the time she has very watery high juice squash or water out of a sports cap bottle (she loves these).

We visit the dentist every 6 months and so far we have been passed with a clean bill of health (in the teeth department) :D the only problem we do have is she sucks her thumb and she is pushing her teeth out and the dentist has said she has to stop

  • From what I am aware of, all juices are bad for the childrens teeth.

My DD drinks water, when she is constipated, I wack aload of orange juice in her water.

It always puzzles me a bit when you see people giving babies juice because how do they know they want it unless you give it to them. My next door neighbour told me her DD (same age as mine) would only drink tea (this was when she was about 1). Well how did she know she liked it unless she'd been given it????

I used to sit on an Infant Feeding Committee at my local maternity hospital and I remember one health visitor telling us that one of her Mums (baby 1 week) asked when it was ok to give tea. Another midwife said that was nothing, she once visited a mum straight out of hospital at 2 days and found her giving her baby tea in a bottle! Sometimes I despair!

I think that, in general, a little of most things is ok, its when it is in excess that it is a problem. A carton of orange juice once in a while is fine but if it is given constantly then it becomes a problem.

Personally, I gave watered down fresh juice in preference to squash until about 5 and even then, I gave it in a normal cup a soon as possible, never in a bottle and with a straw occaisionally as a treat.

If you can get away with just water then even better. There are lots of 'on-the-go' cups about for both toddlers and older children so it is easy to take water with you so that cartons are for treats and emergencies. Its just a question of getting into the habit. You have to remember nappies and changes of clothes etc so just add it to the list!

yep, we do that but in an emergency i would buy juice (tropicana go, because he's too little for undiluted juice i think). he has had a sip of my tea and hated it. they want to try what everyone else has and if we're at home it will only be water, tea or juice he sees. at mcdonalds type places i get a bottle of plain water and ask for the happy meal cup and ice, sometimes he has some of spud's tropicana in the water. i don't know what age he'll come across fizzy drinks - maybe at school parties?

    I was on me hols!!

Teerah has given the same answer as I would have done though!!

The only drinks that have NO detremental effect AT ALL on the teeth are milk & water. (With NOTHING added to them !!!).

Don't worry too much about what goes in at mealtimes, but between meals milk or water ONLY.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I always had squash and juice from when I was very young. I always had healthy teeth. Just brush them properly and not straight after juice and you'll be fine. Its a huge media hype about anything and everything even if a few people have been affected.

Most stuff is good in moderation, IMO juice doesnt need to be diluted.
