my 1 year old drinks squash when he's at a toddler group - everyone else drinks it and he enjoys it, although he does drink more than when he drinks water, probably because he likes the squash so much. he hasn't tried fizzy drinks but probably will when he's older - my ten year old drinks them occasionally. if he is at a friend's house or a party, or my mum's house he can choose fizzy drinks but only if they are proper brand names because the cheap ones tend to contain azo dyes. i won't put a ban on coke but we don't buy it - i know some children who drink coke all day every day and i wouldn't want that for my children, but the occasional drink won't do much harm. i actually think banning junk might do more harm in the long run but feel free to disagree with me!

peraps i'm wrong but i see many parents banning certain junk for their kids but they drink alcohol or even smoke in front of the children. double standards - adults are allowed poisons but you're not, and you're supposed to understand why you can't have a coke but just gloss over all the reasons why drinking alcohol is bad for your parents

I wouldn't drink undiluted fruit juice myself as it hurts my tummy, we all drink fruit juice like you would cordial, an inch or two of juice in a glass topped up with water. It sounds revolting but your taste buds do adapt.

I was brought up on pop from the 'pop man' (remember him? yum, cherryade! :D ) and what I drunk was never a problem. When I was a teen I lived on Diet Coke (and Marlboro Lights  ). When my first daughter was born I gave her sugar free cordial and it was only while pregnant with my second daughter that I found out the dangers of aspartame and began looking at the labels on the stuff I was drinking and giving my daughter to drink.

From that moment I started drinking water and only gave my daughter water. When second baby came along she was breastfed and then was given water at weaning. When I eventually started buying fruit juice it tasted like battery acid after spending so long drinking water so I diluted it as above. Now that dilution is really quite nice and often tastes like the cordials I used to buy but slightly less sweet.

So after that essay :D what I'm trying to say that you can train your tastebuds to appreciate a little bit of fresh juice in quite a lot of water. My girls have this as a treat with meals (as the saliva produced while chewing helps sort out the acids in the juice) and they don't feel hard done by at all. I must admit that when I see children drinking Coke I shudder, then again my husband drinks it and I shudder at that too  Everything in moderation as the previous poster said but I don'tthink that Coke has a place in children's diets (and only in adults diets when mixed with vodka :D )

Oh and I stopped smoking a l-o-n-g time ago, before the children came along ;)

Have you ever read what's in fruit shoots??? There's all kinds of nasties in the,.. even in the water ones! Fruit Shoots contain Aspartame which is a known Carcinogenic! Not nice!
i dunno i dont usually buy them but i forgot his beaker and thought it would be easier for him to drink out of, i got him a glass of orange instead.

astonsmummy i wouldn't worry about buying the occasional fruit shoot if you're out and forget the beaker or he wants an extra drink. although mine likes ordinary water and most places sell that it's not always in a child friendly bottle so i have bought a fruit shoot once, and once even a little bottle of sunny delight. i await the flaming :D

a tip I found worked well to get my ds to drink more water. Buy a drinking bottle with a sports cap on it (you can get them with your kids fave character on) fill the bottle up with water before you go to bed, and leave it over night with the sports cap in the open position. All the chemicals that are added to the water disperse overnight and the water tastes better. My ds used to refuse to drink water because he said it tasted funny, I read this tip in a mag tried it and he happily drinks the water out of his bottle all the time now. (so much so I had to buy him a couple more sports bottles too keep up with demand lol) I only ever leave the bottles over night though, first thing in the morning I close the caps and put them in the fridge.

I even tried a Brita filter but he still prefers the water that's been left overnight.
