I water down fruit juice I buy but not the juice I blend at home. As for straws we don't use them.Barclaycard 3800

it is advisable to give pure orange with a meal and water or milk between meals0

My 3 were given weak squash/cordial or milk, they never had fizzy drinks and I can proudly say that the eldest 2, DS1 15 & DS2 13, (DD only 5, so no history yet!) didn't lose their 1st tooth until 7 & 8 respectively and have never had any fillings or decayed teeth :j
Straws were only used for treats.
It is especially important to me, as I had the most rubbish teeth on earth and last year sent thousands of pounds on corrective dentistry!0 -
My little girl is 22 months and drinks milk or water but will occasionally have fresh orange juice watered down.. or on the rare occasion (and I mean RARE) will have squash. The way I see it is everything is fine in moderation so as long as they're not having it 24/7 I don't see the harm. Orange juice will make up part of their 5 a day anyway.Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

if you have older children and they want to / like to use a straw,
you can teach them to aim the straw at the back of their mouth (rather than being held in the front by the front teeth IYSWIM)
that way the drink does almost straight down the throatand doesnt bathe the front teeth in sugary fluids
you may have to try it yourself to SWIM lol
its hard to explain / describe !0 -

Spot on Rachie B, using a straw in this way would be the most effective way to not let the juice touch the teeth at all, and therefore the most tooth friendly. However, it depends on how your child uses the drinking straw. As long as such juices are used at meal times and not held in the mouth and swished around then the damage is really quite minimal. Water only between meals and leave brushing for at least 20-30 minutes after the eating/drinking.0 -

Yup, wheres Toothsmith when you need him? DD and DS only drink water or milk, it's all they have at nursery and school too. The first "proper" birthday party DD went to, they had those "cup" drinks (iykwim) and hers was a blue one - I was going to stop her but I thought it was okay as a one-off. Ten minutes later she was running around the place like a complete lunatic with all the e-numbers.
It always puzzles me a bit when you see people giving babies juice because how do they know they want it unless you give it to them. My next door neighbour told me her DD (same age as mine) would only drink tea (this was when she was about 1). Well how did she know she liked it unless she'd been given it????
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
orange juice is not kind to teeth as stated before. its best really watered down.- the best natural juice is white grape - i got this info from my local dental health promotion dept. i have bought mine bottles of water with the sports top - then i refill it from the tap and put it in the fridge - the kids really see it as a treat, and the same bottle has been used for months (obviously well washed)Give blood - its free0
