The Life in the UK Test is required if you are already in the UK (with Indefinite Leave to Remain) and wish to become a British Citizen.

The real hurdle for many people is getting to the UK in the first place; this is particularly so for foreign nationals wishing to join their partners in the UK on either a fiancee or marriage visa.

I will be marrying my fiancee in the Philippines later this year. In order for her to get a visa to live in the UK, the UK Border Agency requires her to pass an English Test! English is the second language of the Philippines and is used universally in the judicial system and is the language for teaching at Philippine schools.

My fiancee can speak five languages fluently (including English) and is at conversational level in another three. She has a BEd degree (taught in English) from a Philippine University and taught English at a primary school in the Philippines, but she still has to take the English test!

Now, take an EU (or Swiss) national or any national of a majority English speaking country; they can join their partners in the UK (a visa may be required) without even having to take the test, even if they cannot speak a single word of English!

Is that not a form of discrimination?

No, it's the law of the land.

Criky, being a U.S. citizen living in ENGLAND for the past 40 years it's a good job I don't want to pass a BRITISH citizenship test. I only scored 54%
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I am sure you will agree that "the law of the land" can be discriminatory too.

I passed (just) :D Although after recent events I'm not sure I actually still want to be a UK citizen :(

You have passed the practice citizenship test.

Questions answered correctly: 18 out of 24 (75%)

Time taken: 05 minutes 44 seconds
  • Haha yep I failed - maybe it's cos I is Cornish!!! What on earth are these questions? I feel sure there are more important and relevant questions to be asked.

I was born and raised in Cornwall, and have lived in the UK all my life - I better leave then I guess!!!

46% so I suppose I had better exit England as soon as possible.
What on earth do some of those question have to do with being a UK citizen?
  • How can i be expected to pick D, if D is not present?

    Wrong.jpg

Did you maximise your browser as it told you to? Someone else already commented that if you didn't, option D wasn't always visible. Maybe that is one of the tests . . .

It is, but it's a legal and proper form of discrimination. The UK benefits from the free flow of labor within the EU.
