In which year did married women get the right to divorce their husband?
The answer is supposed to be 1857.
But, the act in question came into force 1 Jan 1858.
And to claim the people who could get divorced were 'women' is ridiculous, it was rich women.0 -
I'm sure I've done a citizenship test before and it was very different from this. Much more about culture and customs. From which I learnt that I'm not behaving right either."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0

I scvored 50%.
Having lived in Spain full-time for five years, as an immigrant, I probably know more about how to apply for a medical card etc there rather than the UK!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

That's bizarre. All the options were there when I did it. That's one of the dual answer questions that I actually got right. I see that you would have got it wrong anyway but that's not really the point0 -
I got 46% and I consider my national identity to be British. This test is ridiculous.
I have no idea where our immigrants were coming from in the 80s, because to be quite frank, I don't care. As long as my neighbours are happy to be in this country, it doesn't matter if they moved here from Surrey or Sweden.
I don't know when women were legally allowed to get divorced, but I do know that I have equal rights in this country and that I'm lucky we're this enlightened now because it wasn't always that way. I know I have opportunities my ancestors didn't have - but no, I couldn't tell you the year things started changing. I don't think it's that important, either.
I said those aged 18 and under get prescriptions free, because the majority of them do. You get free prescriptions when you are in full time education and very few children in my experience actually choose to leave school at 16.
It's right that those who want to become British should do a test, but this test doesn't help demonstrate that you are British at heart - just that you memorised a bunch of text books. Does that make someone more likely to be able to integrate? To want to integrate? I doubt it.
We should be asking questions such as these:
Which one of these isn't a well known British soap?- Eastenders
- Emmerdale
- High Street
If someone enquires into your health, how should you respond?- Tell them about that nasty cough you've had for the past three days, that papercut you got at work yesterday and for good measure, show them a print out of symptoms for swine flu, where you've ticked off the ones you think you have, thus proving you're very ill indeed
- Tell them you're fine and thank them profusely, even if you're critically ill and need urgent medical attention in the next ten minutes or you will keel over and die, ensuring your upper lip remains stiff throughout the conversation
What should you do if the sky falls in?- Write to your MP for advice
- Make yourself a cuppa, don't worry, it will look better in the morning
What should you do if someone discriminates against you?- Accept that you're not as good as other people and deserve to be treated that way
- Get help from the CAB/ACAS/your Union/your employer/your MP/your friends/your family/a charity/anyone else because you're British and we don't stand for crap in this country; everyone is equal
Which one of these isn't a typical British dish?- Spag bol
- Korma
- Sweet and sour chicken
- Quiche lorraine
- Dog and chips

The test is totally bizzare. The rules of the test do not even allow for participants to challenge the results! Inm other words, Big Brother is always right even when he is clearly wrong!
I reckon the model answers to around 5% of the questions are wrong; Many are wrong simply because there has been a change in the law. When the results of the 2011 Census are published I wonder how long it will be before this ridiculous test catches up?0 -
16/25 Fail.
I knew probably eight and guessed the rest.
What I don't understand is why 45 minutes? It took me 5 minutes. You either know the answer or you don't. If you were allowed to use the time to Google the answers, 45 minutes would be a reasonable time and also demonstrate a very useful skill - far more helpful than memorising useless bits of pub quiz trivia.
On the other hand, foreigners often speak much better English than us natives, so why shouldn't they be expected to know more about Britain than we do? :rotfl:0 -
You have failed the practice citizenship test.
Questions answered correctly: 17 out of 24 (71%)
Time taken: 05 minutes 24 seconds
Please select 'Test summary' for a full summary of your test and for advice on how to use the Official Handbook and Study Guide to prepare for the actual test.
Please note: At the end of the actual test, your answers will not be displayed on screen. At the end of the test session the test supervisor will tell you whether you have passed or not.
How am I going to explain that to my fiancee who will be taking the test in about 3 years time?0
