I have only come across this thread this evening and based on what I have read I have signed up to Budget Energy. However I was wondering what is the accurate comparision prices per unit when NIE give a 4% discount to those customers who pay by monthly dd? Does Budget Energy give a 4% discount?0

They are 17.9% cheaper than PowerNI before the 4% so that's 13.9% after it.NIGUY I have been switched to budget for about 6/7 weeks.Have had no trouble with them.Admittedly they do seem to be a small company but dont seem to be as greedy as some others which i suppose would perhaps make people a bit suspicious. However as switching is new to NI they and we have to start somewhere.Besides that, they dont hold us to any contract so we can leave when we want if we dont get the service we like. This is what i am baseing my faith on them with.I would imagine that this company will and is growing everyday.Maybe their lack of advertising on telly saves them money so that the customers can benefit.
Just my thoughts on it.BUMP this postHere! Here! totally agrees with rolo1.Much easier to keep an eye on it and not have an enormous bill every 12/13 weeks...phew what a nightmare that used to be :eek:Danny not sure either about the economy 7.If you feel like ringing budget energy here is their number. Freephone 0800 012 11 77.I see you are still having bother with switching. All i can say is that reading from the posts on here that most seem to be satisfied with their switch.Cant understand why you are having all this trouble with them.I suppose the only thing to do is to be patient with them and hopefully all will end up fine in the end.Failing that ring them and ask for their manager's name and address and threaten to write a letter of complaint to them if it isnt sorted soon.
If i was in your situation i would try to stick to the one route when contacting them ie.by phone or email but preferably phone as you will always be able to speak to a person and get any questions answered there and then and contact them during their opening hours and dont leave messages for them to get back to you as you end up putting the power into their hands.Be nice with them even though you may be angry as you will get much further with your problem.
I hope you get it sorted out very soon.
Hazel, tell the truth, how much are they paying you? And if it's nothing then why not?0 -

Budget Energy is charging 14p excluding VAT per unit from Friday 25th November 2011, 14.7p including VAT per unit. Power NI is charging 17.1p including VAT per unit from 1st October 2011 to those who pay by monthly DD. Therefore by changing supplier I would be saving 16.3265%.
Considering in the last year we have used 4858 units and presuming we use the same this year Budget Energy would cost us £714.126 for our annual electric bill while Power NI would cost us £830.718, a difference of £116.592.
Have I done my maths correctly?0 -
Jo, there are different tariffs for bill pay and keypad - there are calculations earlier in this thread that show the percentage differences I have quoted but I think they are the bill pay rates.
But basically the answer to your question is yes - Budget do seem to be that much cheaper than PowerNI and so far there doesn't seem to be a "catch" particularly as nobody is tied onto a contract so can move elsewhere if their competitiveness changes.
Interestingly PowerNI's profits have dropped and they only made 26 million last year! This is before Budget entered the market. Glad I no longer help them do that!

To clarify, it's *NIE's* profits which have dropped, not PowerNI's. The problem with the BBC report is that it doesn't make this clear.
NIE (the transmission and distribution business) is owned by ESB. PowerNI (the supply business formerly known as NIE Energy) is owned by Viridian.
So, in the BBC report, it's actually the transmission and distribution business that has lower profits than last year. Presumably PowerNI will report at some point, and then we can see whether or not competition has had any impact on them.0 -
Finally seem to have got information via email about the price increase. This email popped into my inbox at 10am this morning:
Budget Energy's new rate for Bill Pay customers, which will take effect from the 25th November 2011, is 14 pence per unit (excluding vat).
Budget Energy still remains 17% lower than Power NI & Airtricity's Standard Rate.

RTNI Here is what my email said this morning...
Dear HAZEL
Budget Energy¹s new rate for Key Pad meters, which will take effect from 25th November 2011, is 14.81 pence per unit (including VAT).
This unit rate is 15% cheaper than Power NI¹s rate of 17.37 pence per unit.
Any top up that you purchase on or after the 25th November whether online, over the phone or at your local Payzone Shop will be at the new rate. A code will be issued to you at the time of purchase, which you then enter into your Keypad.
May I take this opportunity to thank you for your custom and we assure you of our best attention at all times.
Should you require any more information please contact Customer Services on Freephone 0800 012 11 77 or visit our website at www.budgetenergy.co.uk.
Yours sincerely

So time to load up on cheaper units then for those on keypads then? Suppose you can pile as much on as you can afford and keep the savings for as long as possible.Regards, Robin.2011 MFW # 34
