I remember a phonetics lecturer who told me that he would expect a five year old to know what a voiced velar plosive was when i was stuck on an answer!!!!

Erm... did your phonetics teacher ever work with children and ask them to produce a voiced velar plosive? i highly doubt it! I bet he would just say "gimme a /g/" lol. as a student SLT i know if i asked any child to do that they would look at me confused.

I agree that alot of the lecturers i get are people with research fellowships and postgrads that are never able to answer any of the questions you ask but i am quite lucky to often get a lecturer who is qualified as a lecturer and also as a therapist and who still works as a therapist.

Oh, when I rule the world..!

This thread is my new means of procrastination. There should be a negative-thanks button... And if anyone catches me online, they should un-thank me. Maybe that'd get me to GO AWAY :j

It was actually JC Wells, he had revised the IPA in 1979 and obviously thought he owned it, he was a dreadful man who had everyone close to tears following their phonetics oral.

I have to say, SLT lecturers were slightly better than the other depts (anatomy and physiology were the worst) but you'll soon find out that there are plenty of therapists who cant deliver a lecture either, I've snoozed through many a course since I qualified!

Oh and I think you may have picked the wrong profession for the fabulous pay and big house in the country unfortunately!

I'm exactly the same! How weird. I can be at home for a couple of days, full of good intentions to get stuff done, and surprisingly not much does get done. Then when I know I have to go out to work I only want to stay at home, because I KNOW I would do it if only I didn't have to go out right then.

The thing is I always know i'll feel better if I get things done, and I always end up feeling $h!te when I don't, but that still doesn't seem to be enough motivation for me. :o

wow you have pretty much described me there..

  • it feels good to hear about other people who procrastinate too...all of my friends at uni are super organised.

i think one of the reasons i procrastinate so much is because i didn't have to put in much effort during gcses, college and even first year of uni and still managed to get the grades i wanted. now that i'm in second year, i feel very stupid and am annoyed at myself for not knowing more about my subject. there's always the "it's going to be fine" feeling though which stops me worrying about things...i think i'd much rather be a panicky person and get everything done early to avoid the last minute stress of handing stuff in.

maybe i'll change one day...maybe. (i write all this while i have a group project to hand in on friday. thursday night/friday morning should be fun..).

  • How do you get over procrastination?

I am 33 now, still studying, and still as bad as I have always been! I now have to write my Ma dissertation, but I cannot even get started on the proposals.. am I just lazy?:o

Like lots of you, I find other things to do when I should be studying - whether its reading on here, cleaning the kitchen/bathroom etc, or cooking, food shopping etc! I normally find something 'useful' I should be doing instead of studying, even though I know I have to knuckle down and get it done!

I am also a last minute panicker, and work well under pressure, although every time I am still up at 4 am cursing and downing gallons of coffee, I wish I had started earlier!

Is it possible to stop being a procrastinator, or is it genetic or something?

    What do you think?

Does anyone have any good strategies for dealing with this? If so please let me know!!

    thanks
