The problem with university teaching is that most of it is done by postgraduate students or people who are carrying out research, many have had no training on how to actually teach. It means you get the brainiest most anoraky people in your subject area who have forgotten what it is like to talk about their subject to people who know very little about it. I remember a phonetics lecturer who told me that he would expect a five year old to know what a voiced velar plosive was when i was stuck on an answer!!!!

    This thread is funny :T

... now, get on with it!!!!

p.s. I am the world's worst. I did (in)famously write an entire PhD chapter in one day once - 10,000 words in a 12 hour session

    ^^Finally, someone worse than me!!

I did an entire 15-minutes of revision last night. I'm actually (genuinely) impressed with myself. Especially as the exam isn't for another nine-days! I might actually get round to watching Shrek & Hard Candy today. And find out what Post Modernism is (the topic of the exam).

I have an essay for 12pm, 9th Jan. Oh christ.

That is the point really as lecturers are trying to teach and research at the same time that they have no time to really teach as they are woking so hard at researching. That is the whole flaw in the university system, people should be researchers or teachers and not both!!

  • ^^It's quite interesting... We're doing fairy tales (Angela Carter, Shrek, Hans Christian Anderson, The Grimms) + Post Modernism. Understanding the actual term is the difficult part! Once it clicks, you think 'how on earth did I not understand that?!' :)

What subject do you do? x

i am studying sociology, but i agree once you get the initial understanding of the term you do feel like kicking yourself wondering how you did not understand it.

Academics never write in plain English that you can understand. The vast majority of books and articles are written in the unreadable English, which I am sure they write in on purpose to make it hard to read. If they wrote in plain English then I would learn 200 per cent more than I do at the moment.

    Hello one and all!
I'm new to the forum and shocked (but slightly pleased too!) that I'm not the only one leaves everything till the last minute!

On friday, I had two 3000 word assignments to be in tomorrow, and had only written 1800 on one of them, and nothing on the other!!

I've now finished one and taking a short break before getting on with the other one..... (already written 1012 words).... would like to try the Wikipedia 6 degrees, but haven't really got time at the moment!! :rotfl:

Thanks to all, hope all those who are busy writting last minute assignments get them done and submitted on time!!
