On the exercise front, I’ve plucked up the courage and I’m going to join the gym tomorrow as I’ve now lost 2 ½ st and although I’ve still got roughly 3 ½ to 4st to lose I thought if I started the gym now it will hopefully help me lose weight and more importantly tone up as I go as with so much to lose I’m genuinely worried about the condition of my skin at the end. (I fully understand the baby belly thing but my youngest is now 13 – what excuse sorry reason do I have other than he was 10lb 1 ½ oz and premature?) Does anyone else with a biggish loss feel the same way or have I watched one too many 10 years younger bikini specials ? (Roughly 2 I’ve watched but I think it might have been 2 too many and I’m wondering if needbe what my chances are of a tummy tuck on the nhs at the end of my journey? ).

    Hi Cheeky,
I'm in about the same boat as you are with my weight. I've been bigger than my start weight here before, and after 4 kids the old bod has been stretched significantly! I also share the same worries about ending up with loose skin, and I'm resigned to keeping the 'apron' as plastic surgeons put it, albeit a smaller one (I hope). To be honest I'm happier to get into an all in one swimsuit looking vaguely 'normal', rather than lumpy dumpy as I feel now.

The chances of a tummy tuck on the NHS are nigh on impossible without having lost a very large amount (like 20 stone), unless you have major 'psychological issues' which would have to be proven. I do know somone who had this op done privately as a 40th birthday present to herself, and it was a far more major op than she imagined, could do hardly anything once back home after hospital, was off work for 3 months and had some post-op complications too. It is not something to be undertaken lightly, and the scar is enormous apparently - nothing like the 'caesarean' style one she was anticipating, higher up and hip to hip in width. She thought it would mean she could at last wear a bikini, but with the scar she'll never contemplate one now. It's a bit like the Sharon Osbourne of surgeries, she looks fine fully clothed, but is apparently (covering my legal behind there) covered in scars from surgery on her thighs, bingo wings, tummy & boob job.

Personally, I'm going to keep plodding on at the gym & swimming - it is having definite results on my belly - and invest in a jolly good pair of 'Bridget Jones' style pants to hold anything left in!!

Anyway, I was looking into buying a Protein Milkshake, as my friend says its meant to be really good, and just want other people views on which flavours to buy and is it worth it? Tessco cheapest tub is about £19.50 which I was thinking of buying! they have chocolate flavour and orange flavour! Has any1 else used any?

    Thanks in advance, lethal

    Hi Lethal

I don't think it's necessary for most people to use protein shakes - i think they are intended for really serious sportspeople who are training 2 or 3 times a day to get their protein requirement. For the rest of us a well balanced diet with normal protein from food (ie chicken etc) should be plenty.

There is a limit to how much protein your body can absorb anyway, the rest just gets wasted so there isn't any point in spending extra money on protein drinks.

And i think that protein is taken by sportspeople for building extra muscle, so if you're just looking to slim down and maybe get toned up they probably aren't what you're looking for.

    Hi

I'm glad to see that a few more of you are now measuring yourselves. Consultant31 (who else ;) )advised me to do this a few weeks ago and like Edimew I was really shocked especially with my waist measurement. I made light of it at the time by joking about wanting an elastic tapemeasure but the shock was deadly serious. I couldn't believe that I was squeezing myself into clothes that were many sizes too small, if someone had said I was that far round the equator I would have called them a liar!!

Many times over the years I've read that you should keep a track of your measurements but I've never bothered until now and I wish I'd done it before, because when I weighed myself this week despite not losing much I checked my measurements again and saw a real loss just over the space of three weeks.
I wish that I could be the oldest AND wisest....sadly it's not the latter :p but my time will come _party_ wooooh hoooh! Beware!!!!!!!
  • Just lost another 3/4lb over the past 2 weeks. I'm going away next week (France) so it is going to be a bit tricky to stick to my regime. I'll do my best. Godd luck to you all over half term.
Weight loss - here we go again - watch this space!

Indeed. I've always weighed myself and watched the weight go up a bit of a time so no surprises. For some reason I just assumed that my waist was around the same as it was 20 years ago. Talk about deluding myself.
Mind you I also did my jelly belly

    Evening all

I've updated the chart - click here.

Does anyone else want to take up the challenge to lose 5lbs by the end of February, as Honey is doing? The last update for the month will be on Monday 26th which is less than three weeks away, so it's probably a more realistic target for people to go for.

Jo - sorry to disappoint you, but yes, it is half term next week! School holidays usually pass me by, but my evening class (ballroom dancing) is held in a secondary school, and we've got a half term holiday next week too! I've warned DH that he's not going to escape that easily - we'll have to practice or we'll forget everything in 2 weeks.

Hope everyone is keeping warm in this chilly weather, and take care in the snow tomorrow.

    Hi Lois,

Put me on the chart for the 5lb challenge - I need my short term targets to keep me on the straight and narrow (or wobbly and bulging in my case)! thanks so much for all the effort you put into keeping tabs on all of us in the weekly chart.

Jo, I'm in south Lincolnshire, and my little treasures don't break up until 16th Feb. After which I'll be locking said treasures in a large trunk until the start of term again. I'll be making the most of my last week of freedom next week by booking myself in for a hair appointment, though I'll probably be tearing it all out by the end of the following week:eek: .
