I'm completely new to this split ticketing idea. Can anyone suggest a split ticket from London Kings Cross to Newcastle?

Under 5's travel free on the train network so your Railcard isn't going to be ANY use

Unless you are trying to travel soon or are going on a date when engineering works are on, it's a waste of time trying to save money on that route as the fare on NXEC is £23 IN TOTAL for both adults

If you are travelling at an awkward time then try going from St Pancras which is next door to KX and splitting the trip at either Sheffield or Leeds

Im looking to book a train journey for 3 adults from Edinburgh Waverley - Cardiff Central on Fri Aug 22nd returning Sun 24th Aug and im struggling to find a cheap enough fair that will stop me taking the car.
    Have you considered flying instead

BMI fly to Cardiff & Easyjet fly to Bristol.

You don't even have to fly both ways so you can take the cheap(er) train on the Friday and then fly back home
  • Hi everyone
Firstly i want to say thank you to this site - i hadn't really heard of splitting my journey tickets before.

I need to travel on 17th August (a Sunday) from Morecambe to York one way and was tied to a certain time - the cost of this on Trainline, Raileasy and National Express was £30.30 but i have found if i split the ticket into Morecambe-Leeds then Leeds-York (I actually have to change at Leeds anyway) i can travel for £23.80! :j Fab!

It is legitimate to pay for the under 5 to get railcard discounts (confirmed from railcard leaflet) if it works out cheaper

    Hi Everyone,

I seem to be having trouble getting a saving from splitting the tickets for the above journey and wondered if anyone could help?

I need to arrive in Blackburn before 11:00h on Monday 14th July. I'll be looking to return the same afternoon, proboably around 16:00h

At the moment the only tickets I seem to find include Virgin Trains' service from London Euston to Manchester and the prices are really high, it's looking like around £200 for the return journey!!

Any help from MSE'ers woudl be much appreciated!!

Im all for the green option but i wont be paying £300 when i could take the car for a hell of a lot less.

Any tips or tricks will be appreciated

If you could travel down a day earlier on the Thursday, you could get as far as Birmingham for £5, plus £1.50 booking fee, for 3 adults (that's total, not each) through www.megatrain.com . That should bring the price down a bit!
  • Im not sure if this is cheap but as i am doing the GNR in Newcastle in October i needed transport, more to the point trains.

I did London Euston - Birmingham New Street - Advanced Standard Single - £6.95 - Virgin Trains

    then

Birmingham New Street - Newcastle - Advanced First Class Single - £34.00 - Cross Country

on the way back i did

Newcastle - York - Advanced First Class Single - £12.00 - Transpennine Express

York - London Kings Cross - Advanced Single - £22.45 - Grand Central Trains

I think you are being too clever booking now for London to Newcastle as the cheap tickets won't be available for at least a month. NXEC are only booking up till the middle of September & it's rare you can't get tickets for £11.50 one way.

In any case a cheap option is to book London to Sheffield or Leeds from St Pancras then Sheffield / Leeds to Newcastle.

I'm trying to split an upcoming journey, but had a thought and wondered whether anyone would know the answer to this:

If I buy a ticket online for travel on Sunday at say 08:30 (ie the cheapest single price) but leave on the next train (normally costs more) would I get found out?

Also with return journey, if I bought the cheap ticket for arrival at 23:00 but travelled two hours earlier could I get away with it?

I don't know whether it would be detected by the ticket checker (whether times are printed on?) and whether an excuse of "sorry I missed my train" and "I had to catch an earlier one" would wash with them?

If it helps, I will be picking my tickets up from a FastTicket machine.
*Edit* just read the rules on 'Advance' fares - states must travel on train you purchased ticket for. But can this be enforced/checked?
